Box Score 2 Gordon College Softball continued their Florida trip with a matchup first against the No. 14-ranked Carthage College Reds where the Fighting Scots battled but came up short in a 7-2 loss. In the second game, the Scots chipped away at UMass Dartmouth's five run lead, but couldn't get over the hump, falling to the Corsairs, 5-4.
Game One:
- Carthage opened up the home half of the first with a two-bagger down the left field line from the bat of Donna Stevens (So./Darien, Ill.) before Mara Little and the rest of the Scots' defense retired their opponents consecutively to keep the score at 0-0.
- The Reds put together a four-run second inning as well as adding two more in the third to go on top, 6-0.
- The Scots were knocking at the door in the top of the fourth, Lily River and Arianna Ramsaran began the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second with no outs. Carthage, however, worked their way out of the inning with no harm done to maintain the 6-0 advantage.
- Danielle Koziczkowski (Jr./Grafton, Wis.) used her speed to triple to left center and spring home her squad's seventh tally in the bottom of the fourth.
- Gordon's never quit offense rattled their counterparts in the top of the sixth as the blue and white's Emma Dubois continued her hot streak and laced an RBI double that whizzed by the third baseman's ear and scurried all the way to the left field fence to score Ramsaran. Next up was teammate Amanda Benner who sent a single right back where it came from, scoring Kristen Brown to cut the deficit to five. However, that was the closest the Scots would get as Carthage secured the 7-2 win.
Game Two:
- UMD's Steph Nosky (So./Norton, Mass.) led off the game with a single up the middle but she was soon sent to the dugout after being too aggressive on the bases. The sophomore was pegged out at third after she tried to take two bases on a Cierra Sheerin's (Sr./Bridgewater, Mass.) sac bunt.Â
- The Corsairs struck first in the top of the second as Jaimie Brown (Fr./Taunton, Mass.) hit a sac fly to send Victoria Rossetti (Fr./Valley Stream N.Y.) home. UMD tacked on two more runs in the third and the fourth to go on top, 5-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Kristen Brown sent a ball to the center field fence past a diving Corsair center fielder to break up the no-hitter and give Gordon its first run of the game.Â
- The Scots strung together four hits while taking advantage of a pair of Corsair miscues in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one score game (5-4).
- It was a defensive battle in the sixth and seventh as the game only saw one more hit which was in favor of the Corsairs who eventually took the narrow victory.
