Scots Drop Two In Season Opener

Gordon College Softball opened up their 2020 season this afternoon with games against the Comets of Olivet College and the Sabres of Marian University in Leesburg, Florida. The Scots dropped the first game 16-1 to a strong Olivet before battling through eight innings in an 11-10 loss to the Sabres.

Game One
  • The Comets wasted no time putting four runs on the board in the opening inning, powered from a two-run homer from Jazmin Hildebrand (Sr./Martin, Martin).
  • In the top of the second, Amanda Benner laid down the Scots first hit of the game but was left on base at the end of the inning.
  • The Comets continued their high-powered offense with six hits in the bottom of the second which would compile five runs to give them the 9-0 lead heading into the third.
  • In the top of the third, Karissa Hatchell got the Scots on their feet as she hit a ground-rule double to right-center. Later in the inning she would eventually make it home off an Arianna Ramsaran double, giving the Scots their first run of the game. In the bottom half of the inning, the Comets strung together eight hits, three of which were doubles, to bring in seven, and make the score to 16-1.
  • Benner saw her second hit of the game in the top of the fourth but the Comets were able to keep her from reaching home and they would keep the Scots an arms' distance away the rest of the way to take the 16-1 victory.
Game Two
  • The Scots came out firing in the bottom of the first with Hatchell hitting a shot down the right field line which would land her on third. After two fielders choices, Kristen Brown found herself up to bat with the bases loaded. She made the most of the situation by putting the ball in play to bring Hatchell home and give the Scots their first run of the day. Emma DuBois kept the Scots alive with a double to right that would bring in another run and give her team the early 2-0 tilt.
  • The Sabres cut the Scots lead in half in the top of the second when Emalee Depa (Fr./Mount Prospect,Ill.) grounded out to second but while giving herself an RBI and her team a run.
  • The Scots widened their gap in the third inning after Lily Rivera hit a shot over the left field fence to give her team the two-run cushion. Kristen Brown and Dubois managed hits of their own in the third but would end up left on base to end the inning.
  • In the top of the fourth the Sabres saw their first lead of the game after Andrea Meagher (So./Elmhurst,Ill.) doubled up the middle to bring in two runners and give her team the 4-3 advantage. The Scots would not let them hold that lead for long as Kali Denty scored on a wild pitch to even the score then Ramsaran connected on an RBI double to score Hatchell and Brown followed her with two-RBI single to give the Scots the 7-4 lead heading into the fifth.
  • In the top of the fifth, Julia Corona (Fr./Oak Forest,Ill.) got up to bat with the bases loaded and belted a grand slam over the center field fence to give her team the one run advantage yet again. Once again, the Scots offense struck back with Jenny Curtiss scoring off of Laura Bieren's single and Mara Little's aggressive base running to put them back on top, 9-8.
  • The Sabres wasted no time evening the score as Peyton Loesch (Jr./Bolingbrook,Ill.) hit a solo shot over the fence and then two batters later they took the lead again after another solo-homer, this time by Katy Croeker (Jr./Kenosha, Wis.)
  • In the top of the seventh with a runner on second, Lily Rivera made a beautiful diving catch to save another possible run by the Sabres to keep them at a one-run lead heading into the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Hatchell singled up the middle to drive in the tying run. Little then advanced to third on a wild pitch to put herself in scoring position but it would not be enough as the Sabres defense locked in to leave two runners on base and send the game to extra innings.
  • In the top of the eight with the bases loaded Corona put the ball in play to score Loesch, giving them the 11-10 lead going into the bottom of the eighth. The one-run advantage would be enough as the Scots left a runner on third to end the game and take the 11-10 victory.
The Scots are back in action tomorrow as they play Washington College at 4 p.m. and DeSales at 6 p.m. in Minneola, Florida.
