The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) office announced this afternoon that it has suspended all official CCC sports competitions for Fall 2020
(statement below). This was not an easy decision and reflects two months of intensive deliberation and risk assessment by the CCC commissioner and in consultation with member school presidents and athletic directors. Gordon College Director of Athletics
Jonathan Tymann sent a letter to our student-athletes prior to this announcement.
While this follows a trend of postponements among several conferences in our region (including NESCAC, NECC, the Ivy League, MASCAC, Empire 8) and as such might not be surprising, it is still a disappointment for all of us. As individual institutions and conferences continue to make their decisions about Fall competition availability, we will monitor the changing landscape and make the best decisions possible to move forward with safe and appropriate play.
We know that these are challenging times and this development is not one any of us would contemplate under normal circumstances. The Gordon Athletics staff will be looking at additional ways to supplement the team experience this fall, expanding in areas of leadership development, spiritual formation, and vocational discernment. The bonding experience that is always part of team sports does not have to be limited to the playing field.
Throughout the challenges and uncertainties ahead, we are leaning on one of God's many promises, and hope you will as well: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11). We are trusting that God is leading us so that we can continue to lead others through our dedication, obedience and faithfulness to His call as members of Gordon Athletics.
BIDDEFORD, Maine – In the face of unprecedented challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the goal of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) has remained unchanged: to provide the safest possible environment for our student-athletes in all sports so that intercollegiate athletic competition may safely resume at the appropriate time.
Despite the strong desire to provide our talented athletes the opportunity to play competitively in the sports at which they excel, the CCC Board of Directors has made the extremely difficult decision to suspend CCC intercollegiate athletic competition for the Fall 2020 semester.
With improved public health conditions and relevant NCAA guidance, we hope to begin competition for winter sports athletic competition as early as January 1, 2021. Spring sports currently remain on schedule as planned, with the exception of canceling their non-traditional fall play date. In addition, should NCAA legislation permit fall sports teams to conduct athletic activities and competition in the Spring 2021 semester, CCC schedules and championships may be adjusted accordingly.
The decision to suspend CCC play in the Fall 2020 semester does not preclude individual CCC institutions from making institutional decisions to schedule some athletic competition.
