Scots Hit The Road To Battle Johns Hopkins For First Round Of NCAA Tournament

DIII WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP DIGITAL PROGRAM

Following one of their most successful seasons on record, Gordon College Women's Soccer has earned an automatic bid to participate in the Division III NCAA Tournament this upcoming weekend after defeating Roger Williams University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship match this past weekend, 1-0. The Fighting Scots will travel to Amherst, Massachusetts where they will square up against the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November, 13 in the first round of the tournament. Other teams in their pod include Lesley University as well as the hosts, Amherst College who will battle it out for a spot in the next round. The winner of each game will advance to the second round on Sunday, November 14.

The Fighting Scots and Lynx of Lesley were the only two in the pod of four to earn a bid into the tournament after winning their conference championship. The No. 2 Blue Jays earned an at-large bid after an impressive 14-1-2 overall season record while going undefeated (10-0) in the Centennial Conference during the regular season but were narrowly bested by Franklin and Marshall in the semifinal round of playoff action, 0-1. Amherst secured an at-large bid as well as being selected as one of 16 hosts for the first two rounds of the tournament this weekend.

Johns Hopkins averages a total of 2.18 goals per game, while giving up .41 goals to their opponents. Their top scorer, Katie Sullivan, has a total of 10 goals in 17 games played after taking 58 shots this season. Additionally, Sullivan was honored as the Centennial Rookie of the Year as well as First Team in the Blue Jays' conference.

Joining her on First Team All-Conference was graduate defender Bonnie Shea who recently transferred from Dartmouth to anchor down the back end for the Blue Jays while also adding two goals to the offensive stat sheet. In goal, the Blue Jays rely on Caitlin Hendricks who recorded a save percentage of .899 after swatting away a total of 62 shots on goal while only allowing seven to get by. Hendricks was one of the four Blue Jays who earned a spot on the All-Centennial Second Team.

As for the Scots, Gordon will be led by their six All-Conference selections, Calla Ashley, McKenna Feller, Sofia Gish, Shelby Jones, Allie LaRue, and Savannah Metz. Ashley and Feller landed themselves on the First Team, Gish and Jones earned a spot on the Second Team, while LaRue and Metz secured their names on the Third Team.

After consistently being in the top two in goals and points in the CCC throughout the regular season, Ashley booked nine goals– five of which were game-winners– and five assists for 23 points, notably netting the solo tally in the Scots' 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Endicott College on October 9. As for post-season, Ashley famously netted the game winning goal once again against the regular season Champions, Endicott College, to help bring the Scots to the CCC finals. Additionally, Ashley was part of a double assist in Gordon's 2-1 Quarterfinal win against Suffolk University.

Feller anchored the Scots' dominant backfield for the entirety of the 2021 campaign, together with teammates Metz and LaRue, the Scots limited opponents to a stingy .084 shot percentage. The junior standout also stepped up in big moments on the offensive side for Gordon, registering five goals (including two game-winners) and delivering one assist.

Midfielders Gish and Jones each earned well-deserved spots on the squad for their noteworthy play in the Scots' midfield this season. On the offensive end of the pitch, Jones was the team's second-leading scorer with seven goals and chipped in four assists as well for a total of 18 points. Proceeding the press release, Jones came up big in the Scots' first round of playoffs, securing the game winning-goal against Suffolk University to lock in Gordon's guaranteed trip to the Semifinal round. Additionally, Jones gave the Scots a 3-1 edge against the Gulls in Semifinal action when she found the ball in front of the net after a corner kick to head the ball past the Gulls' keeper. More recently, Jones netted the game-winner in the CCC Championship match against Roger Williams thanks to a feed from Third Team honoree LaRue, to lock in the trophy for the Scots.

The No. 12 Mammoths of Amherst and Lynx of Lesley will clash at 11 a.m. just before the Scots meet the Blue Jays for their matchup at 1:30 p.m. The Mammoths and Lynx last faced each other in 2018 when Amherst overpowered their guests 3-0 after a first half surge.
