Scots To Host Roger Williams In CCC Women's Soccer Championship

After an impressive 14-3-1 overall record (6-2-1) this 2021 season, Gordon College Women's Soccer secured the No. 4 spot in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament. The Fighting Scots' first obstacle in their road to the Championship was No. 5 Suffolk University who the Scots bested 2-1 in the Quarterfinals, securing their bid to the Semis, one step closer to the big match. In Gordon's next round (Semifinals), they faced the towering No. 1 seed, Endicott College at their nest. After a strong second half, the Scots came back to overpower the Gulls 3-1 thanks to a game-winning launch of a kick from Calla Ashley to lock in their ticket to this year's Conference title game. The Fighting Scots are set to host the No. 6 seed, Roger Williams for the big Championship match on Saturday, November 6 at 5 p.m.

As for the Hawks, their journey to final showdown was similar. After traveling to Western New England for Quarterfinals, Roger was able to advance to the Semifinals thanks to a 2-1 win over the No. 3 seed-Golden Bears due to a second half rally. Next, the Hawks met the No. 2 seed, University of New England in the Semifinals and bested the Nor'easters, 2-0, to climb their way back from the sixth seed, securing their trip to the Championship match.

Spearheading the Fighting Scots' will be their six All-Conference selections, Calla Ashley, McKenna Feller, Sofia Gish, Shelby Jones, Allie Larue, and Savannah Metz. Ashley and Feller landed themselves on the First Team, Gish and Jones earned a spot on the Second Team, while Larue and Metz secured their names on the Third Team.

After consistently being in the top two in goals and points in the CCC throughout the regular season, Ashley booked nine goals– five of which were game-winners– and five assists for 23 points, notably netting the solo tally in the Scots' 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Endicott College on October 9. As for post-season, Ashley famously netted the game winning goal once again against the regular season Champions, Endicott College, to help bring the Scots to the CCC finals. Additionally, Ashley was part of a double assist in Gordon's 2-1 Quarterfinal win against Suffolk University.

Feller anchored the Scots' dominant backfield for the entirety of the 2021 campaign, together with teammates Metz and Larue, the Scots limited opponents to a stingy .084 shot percentage. The junior standout also stepped up in big moments on the offensive side for Gordon, registering five goals (including two game-winners) and delivering one assist.

Midfielders Gish and Jones each earned well-deserved spots on the squad for their noteworthy play in the Scots' midfield this season. On the offensive end of the pitch, Jones was the team's second-leading scorer with seven goals and chipped in four assists as well for a total of 18 points. A force on both sides of the ball, Gish contributed immensely to the Scots' stalwart defense and was calculated in her efforts on offense, netting one goal on the year (a game-winner) on just seven shot attempts. Proceeding the press release, Jones came up big in the Scots' first round of playoffs, securing the game winning-goal against Suffolk University to lock in Gordon's guaranteed trip to the Semifinal round. Additionally, Jones gave the Scots a 3-1 edge against the Gulls in Semifinal action when she found the ball in front of the net after a corner kick to head the ball past the Gulls' keeper.

Larue and Metz, were constant headaches for their opponents' offensive game plans. Along with Feller, the pair reduced their opponents' offensive statistics to video game numbers, allowing just eight goals in 16 games (0.49 goals against average) while holding their counterparts scoreless 11 times.

For the visitors, the Hawks are coming in hot with Bianca Robbins, the Offensive Player of the Year, who will be leading their squad. Robbins led the conference with 15 goals (five goals in conference matches) and 33 points in the regular season. The decorated Hawk also recorded five game-winners, leading the conference in this area as well. Along with Robbins, Roger will be led by also found herself on the All-CCC First Team along with two other Hawks who secured an all conference spot. Freshman Rachel Oster joined Robbins on First-Team, followed by Leah Yucius who earned her place on the Second-Team.

The All-Conference trio have been on fire in postseason action as Oster netted the game-winner in the Semifinal round to send her teammates to the Finals.
Robbins was also a threat in the Semifinal matchup against the Golden Bears of Western New England as she recorded the game-tying goal just minutes into the second half, as well as dishing out an assist in Roger's 2-0 win against the University of New England. Additionally, Second-Team member Yucius was the first to put the Hawks on the board in their Quarterfinal game against the University of New England, contributing to Roger's road to the Championship.

The Fighting Scots last met the Hawks in regular season play just two weeks ago when Gordon bested their guests, 2-1. In the conference matchup, Roger was quick to get on the board, acquiring a one-goal edge in the sixth minute of play. However their lead was not held for long as the Scots quickly answered back with a signature goal from Ashley. In the second half, the Fighting Scots went up 2-1 after a goal by Kendra Wentling to give Gordon the eventual 2-1 victory.
