Backert Crushes 600 Meter Race At BU's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener

Kicking off their 2021-22 season, Gordon College Men's Track and Field team ventured to Boston, Massachusetts where they participated in the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. At the meet, the Fighting Scots made history as Joshua Backert crushed the school record for the 600 meter event.

After recording a time of 1:20.98 in the 600 meter race, Backert landed himself a spot in Gordon's record book. The underclassman surpassed the previously held record of 1:28.25 which was earned by Asher Gray in January of 2014. This feat gave Backert a third place finish in the entire meet, coming in just after Boston College's Marcus Manson who crossed the line milliseconds before Backert (1:20.93). The rookie runner earned first in finals section two.

Meanwhile, Cameron Abbot raced the 800 meter event in 2:03.68, landing him in 12th place overall and second in his finals section three.

Senior veteran Steven French added to the fun by throwing a distance of 11.86m in the shot put event, placing him 12th overall and first in his finals flight one.

Lastly, Joseph Tibbles went up against 48 other runners in the 200 meter race, and ultimately placed 24th after recording a time of 24.13.

This marks the singular indoor meet for the Fighting Scots as they start their outdoor season in the spring of 2022.
