Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scots Fly Past Hawks In 2021 Opener

Hitting the hardwood for the first time in 368 days, Gordon College Women's Basketball traveled to Leicester, Massachusetts to square off against the Becker College Hawks. The Fighting Scots came out strong, scoring 26 points in the opening quarter en route to a 70-42 victory over the Hawks.

For Becker, Chloe LaPierre had 20 points and five steals, while Jazlyn Contreras dished out five assists while adding eight points for the Hawks.

Gordon freshmen, Caroline Sikkink and Caleigh Williams each nearly booked a double-double in their collegiate debuts, recording nine rebounds apiece while scoring 19 points 13 points, respectively. Rounding out the leading scorers for the Scots were Serianna Anderson and Madison Wynbeek who scored 10 and nine points in the win.

How It Happened:
  • The Scots stormed out to a 10-2 lead within the first three minutes, led by an offensive clinic put on by Sikkink who tallied eight of the Scots' 10 points.
  • Williams dropped in a pair of layups in the final 60 seconds of the first quarter to double up the Hawks by a score of 26-13.
  • With 3:56 left until the break, Hannah Vincent grabbed the offensive rebound before laying it up and in while taking the contact to complete the 3-point play and put her squad up by 21 points. Gordon continued to keep Becker at bay, holding the Hawks to just five second quarter points to lead 38-16 at the half.
  • The blue and white continued to keep the shots coming, leading by as many as 32 in third before securing the eventual 28-point victory.

Beyond The Box Score:
  • All of Gordon's 11 active players recorded a positive stat in today's matchup.
  • Caroline Sikkink's 19 points in the most points scored by a freshman since 2016.
  • Said Head Coach Carter Shaw: "It was a blast returning to the court after a long 368 day COVID break. Everyone was fired up and the energy and enthusiasm they brought carried us from start to finish. It was nice to see us come out strong in the first quarter and then continue building the lead throughout the game. Our effort on the glass and our overall defensive structure were solid for a first game and it was fun to see two freshmen, Caroline Sikkink and Caleigh Williams, lead us in scoring and rebounding. They were both close to a double-double which is a nice way to start a college career!  There are areas of the game we need to grow in but I'm really pleased with where we are after such a long layoff."
