Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Scots And Nor’easters Break-Even, 1-1 After Gish’s Game-Saving Goal

Gordon College Women's Soccer continued conference action this evening as they hosted the University of New England (UNE) Nor'easters where after 90 minutes of regulation, the Fighting Scots came out with a 1-1 tie thanks to a late goal in the second half from Sofia Gish

How It Happened
  • UNE got on top early, grabbing the one-goal advantage after 2:27 minutes of play off of the first shot of the game. Both squads battled back and forth for control, however, although the Nor'easters were able to outshoot the Scots four to one in the remainder of the half, the score stood at 1-0 before entering the final 45.
  • Coming back from the break, the Scots came out firing as Jesse Skov attempted to get her team on the board with a shot on net that was saved by UNE's keeper. The Nor'easters retaliated with three shots, with the first two missing wide followed by a shot on net that was denied by Gordon's Emily Bengtson in goal. The Scots attempted to tie it up in the 64th minute with back to back shots from Kendra Wentling and Abbey Engle but neither shot was able to penetrate the Nor'easters' defense.
  • With 22:52 ticks on the clock, UNE kept Bengtson on her feet with three shots in a minute and a half span but the freshman keeper protected the net with two diving saves to keep the Scots in a one-goal deficit. After another acrobatic save from Bengtson to hold the Nor'easters down, Sofia Gish scored her eighth goal of the season after finding the back of the net as her powerful shot brushed the goalie's fingers and ricocheted off the right post to cross the goal line and get the Scots on the board to knot it up 1-1. With just over ten minutes remaining in the game, the Fighting Scots attempted to take the lead, firing off four shots to UNE's one but neither side was able to break through, resulting in a tie.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Sofia Gish currently holds the top spot in the conference for number of goals scored with eight and is also tied for first in points (16).
  • The Fighting Scots travel into Boston this weekend to square up against conference opponents, Wentworth Leopards, at 3:30 p.m on Saturday, October 15.
