Hitting the road for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Quarterfinals, No. 5 Gordon College Women's Soccer ventured to Bristol, Rhode Island for a matchup against the No. 4 Roger Williams (RWU) Hawks on their home turf. After 90 minutes of physical and aggressive action, the Fighting Scots narrowly fell to their hosts, 0-2 after a hard fought battle.Â
How It Happened
- The Hawks immediately came out firing as just 38 seconds after the first whistle blew RWU's Leah Yucius had the first shot attempt moments before her teammate Grace Kelly roped one just left of the post. At the 2:41 mark, last year's CCC Offensive Player of the Year, Bianca Robbins exploded with a powerful shot which was quickly shut down by the Scots defense. While the Hawks were able to muster up three more shots in the next 25 minutes, Gordon's back half of the field held strong and was unable to be penetrated. With 17:57 on the clock, Scot goalkeeper Tori Paine showed off her reflexes as the senior dove to deny a Hawk shot in the bottom center of the net after bouncing around in front of the net to keep the elimination game scoreless. Two minutes and 53 seconds later, classmate Calla Ashley ripped the Scots' first shot on net to the bottom left corner but was unable to break the standstill, heading into the second frame, 0-0.
- After 7:37 minutes of battling for control, Gordon's Sofia Gish was the first to get a shot off which RWU's keeper saved to keep the score frozen. The Hawks then answered back with two shots of their own with only one being on net, saved by Paine. It wasn't until the 60:19 mark when the Hawks were able to get on the board after Sofie Morris took advantage of a free kick just outside the box to line one perfectly in the upper left corner to go up 1-0. Both teams traded shots until there was 5:32 ticks left in regulation when Robbins gave RWU a two-goal lead after dribbling past the remaining Scots before finessing one past Gordon's last line of defense. The Fighting Scots refused to go down without a fight as Alexa Weindorf attempted to close the gap with a shot, missing left. Just five seconds later, Gish followed up her teammate with another powerful shot with 1:14 remaining but the senior was unable to penetrate before the clock wound down to zero.Â
