Tibbles Highlights Weekend At Silfen Invitational

MEET RESULTS

The Gordon College Men's Track & Field Team traveled to New London, Connecticut to compete against more than 20 of the Northeast's top teams over the past two days.

Joseph Tibbles represented his squad in the decathlon which began Friday and ended this afternoon. On Friday, Tibbles destroyed the Gordon 100m record of 11.59 which was set twice, once in 2012 and again in 2015 after crossing the finish line at 11.44 to earn a third place finish. The junior came in third place once again after launching the shot put 10.01m. Ending the night with his best outcome, Tibbles cruised to a second place finish in the 400m run, crossing the line at 51.85 which was just .10 behind the top runner from Tufts. Not skipping a beat, Tibbles came out this morning to a trio of sixth place finishes, first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 18.60, then discus with a 26.37m throw, and finishing up with pole vault at 3.45m. Tibbles broke up his sixth place finishes by grabbing the top spot in javelin with an incredible throw of 46.04m. In the 1500m, the junior came in fifth place with a time of 4:57.26. After a highly successful showing, Tibbles recorded the fourth highest point total (5235) in the Invitational, crushing the previous school record of 4663 set in 2019.

In the 10,000m run, Zachary Smith finished in 33:19.79 which was just over nine seconds behind the Gordon school record. Joining Tufts as the only team to have two or more names in the top-10 in the 400m run, Joshua Backert and Jacob Smith completed the run in 49.49 (fourth place), and 50.50 (sixth place), respectively. Later, J. Smith finished just out of the top-10 thanks to a time of 1:56.50 in the 800m run which was a season personal best. Alexander Ferris was just over one second off from a school record in the 400m hurdles after coming in eighth place (59.70). With a new combo in the 4x400m, the Scots' J. Smith, Ferris, Joseph Wasson, and Backert booked a fourth place finish (3.25.48). In the field events, Chase Silvia came in sixth in the high jump (1.80m).

Qualifying for New England Championships from their impressive outings this weekend were: Tibbles in the decathlon, Backert and J. Smtih in the 400m, Z. Smith in the 10,000m, and J. Smith in the 800m.

The Scots head into Cambridge, Mass. a week from today, Saturday April 23  for the Sean Collier Invitational hosted by MIT.
