Scots Crowned CCC Champions For First Time In Gordon History

Gordon College Women's Track & Field have made Gordon College history as the Fighting Scots took home the prize at the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships today at the Brigham Athletic Complex. The Scots collected 126.50 points, Endicott came in second with 116.50, while Suffolk followed in third place with 113 points.

Emma Shearer dominated the 3000m steeplechase, finishing 10 seconds ahead of the closest runner with a time of 12:22.35. It was extremely tight in the 1500m run, as Rachel Brennan was narrowly edged out of the top spot, coming in second place (4:52.54), while teammate Abigail Baier followed behind in third place thanks to a time of 5:07.23. Rookie Amaris Goodwin secured another first place finish (400m) for the blue and white after crossing the line at the 1:00.57 mark. Booking another pair of superb finishes was Goodwin who came in second place in the 100m dash (12.98) and the 200m dash (26.46). Baier made it a photo finish in the 800m as the senior took home the top prize, narrowly edging out a UNE runner by .01. Taking home another medal was Shearer who scored her second first place finish of the day in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.13, finishing three seconds ahead of her competitors. Long distance specialist, Brennan recorded another second place finish for her squad as the sophomore completed the 5000m run in 18:39.96, while teammate Carolyn Day came in fifth with her time of 19:35.69. In relays, the Scots' Shearer, Goodwin, Ellie Scully, and Baier put together a time of 4:19.64 in the 4x400m to come in second place, while taking home fifth in the 4x100m  (Delaney McDonnell, Goodwin, Allison Subat, and Wren Worth).

Moving over to field competitions, Abigail Wirling came in fifth place after a throw of 9.96m in shot put before taking fourth in discus after hitting the 30.98m mark. Baier was electric in the long jump, dominating the field with a jump of 5.06m. Newcomer Tori Paine made a splash in her debut after launching the javelin a season-best 34.53m for a second place prize, qualifying her for New Englands. Both Wirling and Alyssa Hutchinson put points on the board in the hammer after coming in fourth (33.21m) and sixth place (21.65), respectively. In the high jump, Eden Bailey recorded the fifth highest jump as the sophomore posted a 1.42m. In her final jump of the day, Baier came in third after a 10.34m showing in triple jump.

Multiple Fighting Scots will compete next week at the DIII New England Championships hosted by Williams in Williamstown, Mass. starting Thursday, May 5.

*The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) has sponsored a women's track & field championship since 2018. Prior to that an invitational event was held. Gordon won the Invitational in 2008.
