Scots Continue To Smash Records At DIII New England Championships

MEET RESULTS 

Gordon College Men's Track and Field traveled to Williamstown, Mass. Thursday evening to kick off the DIII New England Championships at Williams College where the Fighting Scots earned multiple top-10 finishes while continuing to rewrite their names in the Gordon College record books. 

Joseph Tibbles commenced the meet for the Scots, competing in the Decathlon where the junior earned eighth place All-Regional while breaking his own record in the Gordon College record book after collecting 5241 points (previously 5235) thanks to a top-10 finish in every event. In the 400m race, Tibbles recorded a time of 51.75 to put him in the top spot before earning fourth place in the 100m dash (11.46). Additionally, Tibbles earned a quad of seven-place finishes after completing the 110m hurdles in 18.40, and the 15000m event in 4:54.23 before a 3.30m pole vault and 24.85m discus throw. The junior truly shined in the javelin, landing second place after a powerful 45.59m throw.

Along with Tibbles, Zachary Smith smashed a new school record in the 10000m race after crossing the finish in 32:39. Meanwhile, Jacob Smith finally broke the 800m record previously set in stone since 2010 (1:58.49) after the sophomore recorded a time of 1:55.35. Additionally, Joshua Backert added to the Scots' total after a 14th place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 50.11. 

Gordon's unstoppable relay team continued to dominate the track this weekend, earning seventh place All-Region in the 4x400m as the speedy squad of J. Smith, Tibbles, Jack Reynolds, and Backert flew past their own previous record with a group time of 3:23.87. While Joseph Wasson, Alexander Cravens, Z. Smith, and Colin McGinn added another record to the books in the 4x800m race after crossing the finish at 8:22.28 to land them an 11th place finish. In the 4x100, Tibbles, Henry Lonstein, Chase Silvia and Ferris booked a 10th place finish with a time of 44.76. 

Meanwhile in field events, newcomer Justin Mini secured a top-20 finish in the discus with a throw of 33.84m.

The Fighting Scots plan to continue to break records on Thursday, May 19 when they travel to Cambridge to compete in the MIT Final Qualifier.
