Gulls Claim CNE-Opener Over Scots

Gordon College Softball welcomed crosstown rival Endicott College to the softball field to open Conference of New England (CNE) action where the Gulls swept the Fighting Scots by scores of 8-3 and 11-3.

Game One
  • The Gulls passed off the hot bat early with back-to back-doubles from the top of the order to spark a three-run first inning (3-0).
  • With two runners on, Caoimhe Wernsing belted a shot to straight away center to tie up the ball game at 3-3.
  • After already scoring two in the second, the Fighting Scots' defense was on full display to eliminate any further damage. With runners at the corners, the Gulls attempted to steal, but Madison Murray came up firing from behind home plate to Ami Rivera to catch the runner stealing at second. Then, Rivera sent the ball back to Murray to nail the runner at home to end the inning (5-3).
  • Endicott had one more productive inning offensively for three more runs in the fourth, but relief pitchers Katie Melendy and Lizzie DeRusha kept the Gulls at bay to prevent any more runs on the board.
Game Two
  • After a scoreless first frame, Endicott platted a pair of runs in the top of the second to take the early lead. With two out and two runners aboard after each getting hit by a pitch, DeRusha went the opposite way for a single down the right field line to load the bases. Makayla Falco's patience at the plate was worth it as the freshman brought across the Scots' first run after earning a walk.
  • Gordon loaded up the bases in the third but were unable to bring a run across (4-1).
  • Endicott widened the gap to 8-1, but the Scots continued to battle and put two up on the board in the fifth to bring the score to 8-3. The visitors added three more in the seventh to come out with the win.
Beyond The Box Score
  • Caoimhe Wernsing connected for her first homer as a Scot in game one.
  • Emily Graham had her second multi-hit game of the season in game one, while Lizzie DeRusha had her third multi-hit game in the second game tonight.
  • Gordon hits the road tomorrow to play a doubleheader against the Roger Williams Hawks in Bristol starting at 2:30 p.m. to continue CNE play.
