With the start of the 2013 season, Coach Marc Whitehouse enters his 30th year as a collegiate head coach and his 28th at Gordon College.
Though already hugely successful in his tenure at the helm, Whitehouse reached another milestone during the 2008 season, earning his 300th career win on October 29. Overall he has compiled a career record of 347-139-46, 328-131-43 while at Gordon. Whitehouse said, "This is a great honor for my players and me. I'm happy that our teams have been consistently winning on both the women's and men's side". Under Whitehouse's direction the programs have generated hugely impressive records, the men's standing at 132-48-20 and the women's at 196-83-23, making him the winningest coach in school history. He went on to say, "What is even more satisfying are the relationships I've had with these great men and women who have grown through our program."Â
Whitehouse began his coaching career at his alma mater, Salem State College, in 1978 and was the men's soccer head coach for two years before joining the Gordon College staff in 1980. He had immediate success with the Fighting Scots' men's soccer program as he led the squad to five straight NAIA playoffs, including the National Championship Tournament in 1983 and 1984. During this time he compiled a record of 65-18-11 (.750 winning percentage).Â
After taking eight years off from coaching to spend time with his young boys, Whitehouse returned to the Gordon College sideline in 1992, this time to begin the women's soccer program. Whitehouse directed the women's soccer program from 1992-1998, leading them to three Commonwealth Coast Conference championships and four ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Tournament appearances, efforts which earned him a 93-27-8 (.760) overall record.
Then in 1999, Whitehouse returned to the men's sideline to lead the Fighting Scots to an impressive 67-30-9 record over five seasons with the program. During those five seasons, he led the team to three CCC Tournament Finals, competed in the ECAC Tournament three times, and their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003. Following this successful run with the men, he once again returned to the women's sideline in 2004, a post that he currently holds.
Coach Whitehouse's success can be attributed to his philosophy and the way in which he teaches his players to approach the game. His style focuses on tough defense and a relentless work ethic. Throughout his career, all of his teams have been characterized by their great defense which has been demonstrated in a collective goals-against-average of under one goal per game.Â
Whitehouse has been honored as Coach of the Year nine times by three different associations. He has also had the privilege of seeing many players receive various accolades including several All-Commonwealth Coast Conference and All-New England selections. He has also coached two All-Americans.Â
Whitehouse currently resides in South Hamilton with his wife Ginny. He has three grown boys- Jason, Benjamin, and Ryan- and is the proud grandfather to three grandchildren.
