Field Hockey Loses OT Heartbreaker To UNE, 4-3

Playing host to the unbeaten Nor'easters of the University of New England at the Brigham Athletic Complex today, the Fighting Scots dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in the fourth minute of overtime to move to 5-7 overall on the season.

After a high-paced opening 10 minutes of play, the Nor'easters drew first blood when Laura Egounis (Jr./Boscawen, N.H.) buried an unassisted goal in the 10th minute to give her team the early lead. That lead proved to be short-lived, however, as Gordon's Karli Balmer (Fr./Perkasie, Pa.) collected a pass from Melanie Landis (So./Quakertown, Pa.) and found the back of the net with the equalizer just two minutes later. Then, in the 20th minute, the Scots took charge of the lead when Clara Baker (Sr./Underhill, Vt.) sent home a shot off a pass from Sam Neverett (Sr./Athol, Mass.) to gain the 2-1 advantage.

Maintaining that lead into the half, the Scots were met in the second stanza with heavy offensive pressure from their guests, pressure that would result in a tying goal from Michelle Oswald (Sr./Jay Maine) off an Emily Koehler (Jr./Pelham, N.H.) assist in the 45th minute. UNE would post another 10 minutes later when Casey Clark (So./Bethlehem, N.H.) bested Gordon keeper Anna Bury (So./Huntongtown, Md.) on a solo effort to give the Nor'easters the slight 3-2 edge. Their lead was once again cut short just minutes later, this time by Gordon's Baker, who tallied her second of the day off a pass from Leah LaPalombara (Jr./Glen Mills, Pa.) to even the score at 3-3 and send the game into extra time.

Determined to preserve their unbeaten streak, however, it was the Nor'easters' Koehler who had the definitive score of the match, slipping an unassisted shot past Bury after a scrum in the goal mouth just three minutes into extra time to lift UNE to the 4-3 win.

Bury finished the day with 15 saves in the net for the Scots, while UNE's Kaitlyn Warren (Fr./Boscawen, N.H.) turned away eight in the winning effort.

The Scots will take on Becker in a non-conference game on Wednesday, October 5 while UNE, now 11-0 on the year, will host Nichols in a CCC tilt a week from today.
