Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder
Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) scored a pair of first half goals to help pace the Gordon College men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played on Sweeney Field.
The Fighting Scots wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring 12 seconds into the game when senior forward
Noah McGarr (Westport, Mass.) fed Vandervoort inside the box off the kickoff. Vandervoort’s shot found the inside of the far post and gave the visitors the early lead.
Wentworth countered at the 11:30 mark when junior midfielder Devin Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) fed senior midfielder John Geleski (Wayne, N.J.) just inside the box. Geleski beat Fighting Scots junior
Ryan Coil (Brentwood, Tenn.) to the right side to even the score.
At the 19:52 mark Gordon scored what would prove to be the game-winning tally when junior midfielder
Kellen Kasigurian (Oakwood Village, Ohio) served a corner kick from the left flag into the box where Vandervoort headed it to the top center of the goal for his sixth marker of the season.
Wentworth had its chances to tie the game, but Coil and senior
Alex Sosler (Cleveland, Ohio) helped keep the Leopards in check.
With less than a minute to play, a foul was called on the Fighting Scots, giving the Leopards a free kick from 40 yards out. The service was sent to the box where it was kicked around and eventually cleared by Gordon.
Coil made three saves in 21:11 of work, while Sosler made eight saves over the final 68:49. Wentworth junior John Longo (Needham, Mass.) made four stops. Wentworth held a 25-12 shot advantage.
Gordon improves to 2-5-3 (1-0-2) on the season and hosts the University of New England on Wednesday. That same day, Wentworth (3-4-2, 1-2-1) hosts WPI.
