Playing host to Western New England University today in their final regular season game, the Fighting Scots claimed a 1-0 victory over the Golden Bears to improve to 4-6 in conference play and take the fourth seed for the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament.
Despite holding a 6-1 shots advantage in the first, the Scots were unable to break the stalemate and headed into the break at an even 0-0 with their guests. That all changed in the 60th minute, however, when midfielder Karli Balmer (Fr./Perkasie, Pa.) sent home a pass from forward Samantha Neverett (Sr./Athol, Mass.) for the late go-ahead goal. That goal proved all the Scots would need for the victory as the defensive line anchored by Kelsey Spotts (Jr./Pittsford, Vt.), Eleanor Helai (Jr./Keene, N.H.), and Gayle Watson (Fr./Harare, Zimbabwe) together with keeper Anna Bury (So./Huntingtown, Md.) fended off the WNE attack to preserve the one-goal win.
Bury turned away three on the day while Watson recorded one defensive save in the winning effort. Western New England netminder Emily Mastropaolo (Fr./Cazenovia, N.Y.) posted 10 saves in the loss.
The Scots await results from today's final games around the conference to determine their host in the CCC semifinals slated for Wednesday, November 2.
