Men's Soccer Drops Season Debut To Salem, 1-0

Box Score

Salem, Mass.- Senior, captain Raphael Santos (East Boston, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal on a cross from the right side of the field from junior Maxime Modestin (Salem, Mass.) with 18.2 seconds remaining  to help lead the Salem State University Vikings  to a 1-0 triumph over the Gordon College Fighting Scots in a non-conference matchup played this evening.

The teams played to a scoreless first half with Gordon holding a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.  Gordon had the best scoring opportunity early in the period when Kellen Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) broke into the open field but was turned away by junior keeper Scott Hall (Waltham, Mass.).

Neither team could gain an advantage in the second half, as the game appeared headed for overtime. However, Santos gave the Vikings the victory when his fifth shot of the night found the lower left corner.

Both goalies played well as Hall stopped 12 shots to earn the shutout victory. Fighting Scots senior goalie Alex Sosler (Cleveland, Ohio) had seven saves in the loss.

Salem State is back in action on Saturday when they host Endicott College at noon. Gordon will travel to Framingham State for a match on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
