Field Hockey Rolls To Dominant Win Over Rivier

In a non-conference matchup with Rivier College this evening at the Brigham Athletic Complex, the Fighting Scots rolled to a commanding 12-0 win over the guest Raiders to move to 2-5 overall on the season.

With the scoring getting underway early on when freshman Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) buried an unassisted goal in the fourth minute, Gordon's Samantha Neverett (Sr./Athol, Mass.) netted her first of five goals just 45 seconds later to set in motion what proved to be a completely dominating performance by the Scots. Neverett went on to net another three goals in the first half alone which together with a single tally from senior-captain Brianne Gilbert (Windsor, Conn.) and another tally by Balmer put the host Scots up 7-0 at the break.

Despite a few offensive chances by the Raiders, the second half proved to be a similar story to the first, with Gordon controlling the majority of possession to net another five goals in the half from Leah LaPalombara (Jr./Glen Mills, Pa.), Katherine Bailey (Fr./Baltimore, Md.), Clara Baker (Sr./Underhill, Vt.), Neverett, and Kelsey Spotts (Jr./Pittsford, Vt.).

Mindy Fowler (Jr./Winslow, Maine) ended the game with three assists, while Neverett, Balmer, Heidi Lavigne (Jr./Westport, Mass.), Brittany Hawkins (Fr./Hampstead, N.H.), Ashley Moulton (Sr./North Reading, Mass.), and Gayle Watson (Fr./Harare, Zimbabwe) each dished an assist on the day. Keepers Anna Bury (So./Huntingtown, Md.) and Rebecca Smith (Fr./Verona, N.J.) split time in the goal to preserve the shutout.

With her standout performance, Neverett set Gordon records for most goals in a game and most points in a game, while Fowler tied the single-game assist record.

The Scots return to action on Saturday, September 17 as they travel to face Nichols in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener. The Raiders, now 2-2 overall on the season, will play host UMaine Farmington on the same day.
