Field Hockey Downs Western New England, 2-0


SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Gordon scores a pair of second half goals to defeat Western New England 2-0 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game on Saturday, September 24 evening at Golden Bear Stadium.
 
The Fighting Scots improve to 5-6 (1-1 CCC), while the Golden Bears now stand at 2-7 (1-1 CCC).
 
After a scoreless first stanza, senior forward Samantha Neverett (Athol, Mass.) notched the first goal of the game for the visiting Scots at 51:27. Gordon added an insurance tally seven minutes later as freshman forward Grace Fabry (Escondido, Calif.) finished on an assist from junior forward Leah LaPalombara (Glen Mills, Pa.).
 
Western New England held a 6-2 edge in shots after the first period and a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners. The Fighting Scots took control in the second half as they outshot WNE 12-1 and had a 7-1 lead in penalty corners.
 
WNE sophomore forward Sarah Race (Cazenovia, N.Y.) led the way with all three shots on target.
 
Gordon sophomore goalkeeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) made three stops in the game to earn the victory. Western New England junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall (Providence, R.I.) recorded seven saves in the losing effort.
 
The Scots have a week layoff before hosting the University of New England on Saturday, October 1 at 1:00p.m. The Golden Bears return to action on Wednesday, September 28 as they travel to Manhattanville for a 6:00p.m. non-conference contest.
