BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College sophomore
Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hill, Mass.) recorded two goals and two assists and senior captain
Jess Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) made seven saves in net as the Beavers defeated visiting Gordon College, 5-0, in a non-conference field hockey contest at MacDowell Field on a rainy Tuesday night.
Senior captain Kristen Steigerwald (North Andover, Mass.), senior Courtney Weaving (New Preston, Conn.), and first-year Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) each added goals for Babson (2-1), while Malone also dished out two assists. For Pashos, the shutout was her first of the season and seventh of her career.
Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) made a total of eight saves for Gordon (1-2) before giving way to first-year Rebecca Smith (Verona, N.J.), who added two saves in the final 13:21 of regulation.
Babson scored its first goal of the night in the 12th minute of play, as Steigerwald followed up a saved shot by Lockwood and blasted it into an open cage for the first goal of her collegiate career at 11:24. The Beavers then struck again when Lockwood took a pass from Malone and curled a shot around Bury's outstretched left pad for her second of the season at 16:53.
The Beavers made it 3-0 late in the first half, as Lockwood poked a pass to Weaving on the left side of the crease. Weaving then placed a perfect shot inside the far post for her second of the season at 31:54.
Lockwood tacked on another goal at 52:16, when she took a pass from Malone near the top of the circle and ripped an uncontested drive into the lower left corner for her second of the night and third of the season. It was the second assist of the evening for Malone, who then capped the scoring when she swept her first collegiate goal into a wide open cage off a Lockwood pass at 67:06.
First-year Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.) accounted for three of Gordon's best chances on the night, all of which came in the second half. She nearly scored on a high chip from the top of the circle, but Pashos made a brilliant leaping swipe with her left glove with just over 28 minutes remaining. Balmer threatened again just two and a half minutes later, but this time Pashos made a nice kick save with her left pad on a ball headed for the lower right corner. Babson's senior goalie then stifled the final scoring threat of the night for the Fighting Scots when she came charging out of net to knock the ball off Balmer's stick on a clean breakaway with just under four minutes to go in the contest.
The Scots, now 1-2 overall on the season, return to play on Thursday, September 8 as they travel to Southern Maine for a non-conference matchup.
