Box Score
Sophomore defender
Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) scored her first two goals of the season to lift the Fighting Scots to a 3-2 win over Salve Regina University today in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey action at a rainy Brigham Athletic Complex. The win improves the Scots to 4-9 overall, 2-3 in the CCC while the loss drops Salve to 7-5 overall, 2-3 in conference.
Midfielder
Melanie Landis (Sr./Quakertown, Pa.) rounded out the scoring for the Scots with her third season goal, while midfielders
Karli Balmer (So./Perkasie, Pa.) and
Collette Newcombe (Fr./Rowley, Mass.) combined for three assists on the day.
Salve wasted little time getting on the board as Lisa Bucci (Jr./Irvington, N.Y.) finished a corner from Alexandria Rizzo (So./Hopedale, Mass.) just two and a half minutes into the game to give the Seahawks the 1-0 lead. Despite firing nine shots over the course of the half, the Scots were unable to get the equalizer as Salve's Murphy McCann (So./Westerly, R.I.) made seven stops in net to keep her team up by one at the half.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Bailey netted her first of two tallies less than one minute into the second frame, finishing a feed from Balmer to even the game at 1-1. Then in the 51st minute, Landis gave the Scots their first lead of the day after collecting a pass from Balmer off a corner and ripping a shot from 15 yards past McCann for the 2-1 advantage.
Exactly six minutes later, that lead widened when Newcombe carried the ball down the right side and slotted a pass to the waiting stick of Bailey, who tucked her shot inside the far post for the two-goal lead.
Salve's Heather Kapatoes (Jr./Hopedale, Mass.) cinched the gap back to one in the 64th minute with her fifth goal of the season off a Lindsey Mazzola (Fr./Upton, Mass.) assist, but that was as close as the Seahawks would get as the Gordon defense tightened down the stretch to secure the win.
Keeper
Anna Bury (Jr./Huntingtown, Md.) earned the win in the cage for Gordon with eight saves, while McCann turned away nine in the losing effort.
The Scots take a break from conference action to face Rivier tomorrow at 7 p.m. Salve will host Nichols in a CCC showdown on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m.
