Box Score
In Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey action today at Gordon's Brigham Athletic Complex, the Bison of Nichols College edged the Fighting Scots, 2-1, to improve to 5-2 in league action on the year. With the loss the Scots drop to 2-5 in conference, 5-11 overall.
The Bison stormed out to an early lead after Avery Orszulak (So./Springfield, Mass.) finished a solo effort off a corner to make it 1-0 in the 11th minute.
Despite Gordon outshooting the Bison, 7-4, in the first, that score held throughout the remainder of the period, giving Nichols the one-goal advantage at the break.
Nichols' lead was extended with 27 minutes to go in the second frame when Lindsey Rappazzo (So./Mashpee, Mass.) collected a pass from Orszulak and bested Gordon netminder
Anna Bury (Jr./Huntingtown, Md.) for the 2-0 advantage.
Then in the 64th minute,
Katherine Bailey (So./Baltimore, Md.) breathed life into the Scots' effort with a goal off a
Karli Balmer (So./Perkasie, Pa.) assist to close the gap back to one.
The Bison defense, however, stayed solid down the stretch to keep the Scots' attack at bay and preserve the win.
Nichols keeper Molly Melanson (So./Simsbury, Conn.) earned the victory with eight saves on the day, while Emily Mercure (So/Milton, Vt.) turned away one in relief. Bury finished the outing with eight saves for Gordon.
The Scots return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 20 as they host conference foe University of New England at 1 p.m. Nichols travels for a CCC matchup at Western New England on the same day at 1 p.m.
