Golden Bears Top Scots, 4-2, In Final Regular Season Matchup

Box Score
Shelby Van Huysen (Sr./Killingworth, Conn.) scored five points, Lindsay Lalonde (Sr./Middlebury, Vt.) dished two assists and keeper Kaitlyn Hall (Sr./Pawtucket, R.I.) notched eight saves as the Western New England University field hockey team came from behind to overtake Gordon College, 4-2, in the final Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game of the regular season.

The Golden Bears wind up the 2012 campaign with a 6-13 record and won their first CCC game in 10 starts, while the Fighting Scots fall to 6-13 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

The WNE graduating class of Laura Madaio (Sr./Paxton, Mass.), Caitlin Foster (Sr./Hide Park, N.Y.), Van Huysen, Lalonde and Hall took matters into their own hands to make Senior Day special, as Madaio and Van Huysen, both captains in the back, organized the defense after Gordon took a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by Brittany Hawkins (So./Hampstead, N.H.) just 2:29 into the game.

Though that lead stuck throughout the remainder of the first half, WNE's Sarah Race (Jr./Cazenovia, N.Y.) notched her third goal of the year off a feed from Chelsea Hayes (Fr./Marstons Mills, Mass.) to level the game at 1-1. Just over three minutes later, Van Huysen netted her first of two on the day off a Brooke Kumnick (Fr./Granby, Conn.) assist to give the Golden Bears the one-goal advantage, to which the Scots' Leah LaPalombara (Sr./Glen Mills, Pa.) quickly responded with a goal exactly two minutes later to again equalize the board at 2-2.

From there, however, WNE pulled ahead behind goals from Hayes and Van Huysen to secure their first CCC win of the regular season, 4-2.

Keeper Anna Bury (Jr./Huntingtown, Md.) recorded five saves in the losing effort, while Hall turned away eight in the win.

The Scots are seeded fourth for the upcoming CCC postseason tournament and will travel to take on top-seeded Endicott at 1:30p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
