Box Score
The Fighting Scots captured an authoritative 4-1 win over Western New England University today in front of their Homecoming crowd at the Brigham Athletic Complex, improving to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with the victory. The loss drops the Golden Bears to 4-8 overall, 0-4 in the CCC.
Brittany Hawkins (So./Hampstead, N.H.) led the way for the Scots offensively with a pair of goals while
Karli Balmer (So./Perkasie, Pa.) recorded a goal and three assists and captain Mindy Fowler (Sr./Winslow, Maine) added one goal in the win. Keeper Anna Bury (Jr./Huntingtown, Md.) earned the win with six saves on the day.
The Scots drew first blood just under eight minutes into the first half when Hawkins finished her first of the day on a Balmer feed for the early 1-0 advantage.
That score held until the offensive floodgates opened for the Scots when Fowler finished from Balmer off a corner and Hawkins netted her second of the day from Balmer within the first five minutes of the second frame to give Gordon a comfortable three-goal lead. After setting her teammates up all day, Balmer then netted her own midway through the half to widen the gap even further (4-0).
And though Ashley Adamson (Fr./Windham, N.H.) was able to put the Golden Bears on the board with a solo effort in the 68th minute, that was as close as WNE would get as the Scots' defense hunkered down in the waning minutes to preserve the win.
Abigial Lutz (Fr./Winslow, Maine) shared the win with Bury in net for the Scots, while WNE netminder Kaitlyn Hall (Sr./Pawtucket, R.I.) turned away seven in the loss.
The Scots are back at it on Wednesday, Oct. 10 as they host CCC opponent Salve Regina at 3 p.m., while WNE will host Endicott on Monday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
