Box Score
Hosting the top-ranked Engineers of MIT tonight in Gordon's Bennett Athletic Center, the Fighting Scots conceded a hard-fought battle in their season-opener, 64-53, to drop to 0-1 on the year. The win keeps MIT perfect at 2-0 overall.
Pacing the win for MIT was Mitchell Kates (Sr./Colts Neck, N.J.) with 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals, while Will Tashman (Sr./Atherton, Calif.) recorded 20 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals. Gordon's effort was led by
David Dempsey (Sr./Wallingford, Conn.) with 15 points and four boards and
Park Thomas (Jr./Scottsdale, Ariz.) with 13 points.
MIT's Tashman opened the scoring on the night with a jumper in the paint just seconds into the game to which Thomas responded with a bucket of his own on the Scots' first possession. Over the next several minutes, the Engineers began to build their lead behind six points apiece from Tashman and Kates, giving them a 16-7 advantage with 11 minutes to go in the first.
From there, however, the Scots crawled their way back into the game, outscoring their guests 20-14 in the final minutes before Thomas hit a buzzer-beating three to tie the game at 30-30 heading into the break.
After a slow start in the second by both teams, the game remained tight until midway through the frame when MIT's Tashman, Kates, James Burke (Sr./Scotch Plains, N.J.), and Dennis Levene (So./Weston, Conn.) took the game into their own hands to secure the eventual 11-point win.
MIT scored 17 of their points off turnovers en route to shooting 46 percent from the floor and 84 percent from the stripe.
The Scots closed the night having shot 45 percent from long range and 46.7 percent overall.
Gordon returns to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as they host non-conference Salem State at 7:30p.m., while MIT hosts Emmanuel on the same night at 8 p.m.
