Sophomore center
Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) converted a free throw with no time remaining in regulation to lift the Fighting Scots to a 62-61 non-conference win over host Lesley University tonight at the Nicholas Athletic Center in Cambridge, Mass.
Miersma finished the outing with a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, while senior forward
David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) led all scorers with 18 points to go with nine boards and junior guard
Park Thomas (Scottsdale, Ariz.) recorded 15 points.
Lesley's effort was led by Mike Kaufman (Jr./Boca Raton, Fla.) with 12 points and Justin Rosa (So./East Brunswick, N.J.), Brian Glodowski (Fr./Roseville, Calif.), and Matt Gibson (Sr./Quincy, Mass.) with 10 points apiece.
After a battle of a first half in which neither team was able to gain more than a five-point stronghold, the game remained at a 25-25 deadlock heading into the break.
Then in the opening minutes of the second, the Scots went on a 15-5 run to establish a 10-point lead (45-35) with 13:10 left to play. The Lynx steadily chipped away at that lead, however, tying it up at the 9:00 mark off a Gibson free throw and getting the go-ahead following a three from Gibson on their next possession. That lead expanded to seven following two sets of good free throws from Glodowski, but much like their hosts the Scots were unwilling to go down quietly, reclaiming the lead off a Thomas three-pointer with 2:25 remaining.
Though the lead traded back-and-forth again in the waning minutes, in the end it was the Scots with the final word as Miersma hit the decisive free throw for the narrow one-point win.
Gordon returns to the Bennett Athletic Center for the final matchup of the first semester against conference opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology. Game time is set for 3p.m.
