Hosting their home-opener against non-conference Eastern Connecticut State University today at a blustery Brigham Athletic Complex, the Fighting Scots ceded an 11-4 loss to the guest Warriors to move to 0-2 overall on the young season. The win underscored the Warriors' season debut, as they improve to 1-0 overall.
As both teams adjusted to nearly 40mph wind gusts, it was ECSU who netted the game's opening goals to hold a 2-0 lead after the first quarter of play, with Salieu Bolivar (Jr./Norwalk, Conn.) netting the first of the game at 10:28 and Mike Devine (Fr./Cheshire, Conn.) burying his first of five at the 6:02 mark.
Despite Devine giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead after less than two minutes of action in the second, the Scots broke onto the board at 11:40 when senior-captain
Wes Chittick (Sr./Glenside, Pa.) sent home a solo effort to close the gap, 3-1. After ECSU responded with back-to-back goals from Jeremy Cogliano (Jr./Bedford, Mass.) and Devine, Chittick halted their offensive run with his second unassisted effort of the day at 2:11 to keep the Scots close with two minutes remaining. The Warriors, however, added one more for good measure just a minute later to leave the Scots trailing 6-2 at the midway point.
Though Devine and Gordon senior-captain
Adam Quinn (Gloucester, Mass.) traded goals in the opening minutes of the third stanza, the half belonged to the Warriors overall, who netted five goals to the Scots' two to widen the gap and secure the seven-goal victory.
Devine added three assists and four ground balls to his five-goal effort for ECSU, while Cogliano finished the day with two goals and Bolivar, Kevin Fechtmann (So./Levittown, N.Y.), and Tyler Fresen (Fr./Newington, Conn.) netted one apiece. Additionally, Josh Dubinsky (So./Woodstock, Conn.) collected a total of 15 faceoffs on the day, while netminder Jamie Tommins (Jr./Fairfield, Conn.) turned away 19 for the win.
Chittick led the Scots offensively with his two goals, while Quinn finished with a goal and an assist and
Dan Perednia (Sr./Granby, Conn.) contributed a single tally. Keeper
Houston Zemanski (Jr./Annapolis, Md.) put in a full 60 minutes between the pipes, stopping 12 in the losing effort.
The Scots take to the field for a home non-conference tilt with Salem State on Wednesday, February 29 at 4:00p.m. ECSU returns to action on the same day, traveling to Hoboken, N.J. to face Stevens Tech at 4:00p.m.
