Men's Tennis Spring Break Results: March 11-16

GORDON vs. SHEPHERD- March 11, 2012
Match Results
On the road in Hilton Head, S.C. for spring break, the Fighting Scots were blanked in their season-opener by non-conference Shepherd University to move to 0-1 overall on the young season. The Rams proved overall too strong for the Scots, sweeping every doubles match before claiming wins in all six singles matches, never allowing the Scots more than three games in any set en route to the victory.

Shepherd's Taylor Boyle (Jr./Churchville, Md.) and Kent Thomas (Jr./Charles Town, W. Va.) earned straight 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, while the No. 2 doubles team of Michael Lesko (So./Mt. Airy, Md.) and Steve Kolumban (Fr./Chambersburg, Pa.) and No. 3 team of Al Starlings (So./Mt. Airy, Md.) and Steven Lesko (Fr./Mt. Airy, Md.) both recorded 8-0 wins. After ceding the first set at No. 2 singles, Gordon's Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, N.Y.) was able to take three games off Michael Lesko in the second but in the end was unable to complete the comeback, falling 6-0, 6-3.

The Scots return to action on Monday, March 12 as they face non-conference Greenville at 3:30p.m.

GORDON vs. GREENVILLE- March 12, 2012
Match Results
Looking to rebound after yesterday's loss to Shepherd, the Fighting Scots were unable to take more than two matches overall on the day, ceding a 7-2 loss to Greenville to move to 0-2 overall on the season.

After being swept in doubles play, Gordon's Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, N.Y.) breathed life into the Scots' effort at No. 2 singles, defeating Greenville's Jordan Tingle (Fr./Jackson, Mich.) 6-4, 6-2. Similarly, Dan Cormier (Sr./Ipswich, Mass.) battled to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Drew Herlein (Fr./Spring Arbor, Mich.) at No. 3 singles, but that proved as close as the Scots would come to claiming a win as Greenville cruised to straight-set wins in the remaining singles matches to seal the win.

The Scots take to the court again tomorrow at 12:30p.m. to face St. Mary's (Md.) in a non-conference head-to-head.

GORDON vs. ST. MARY'S (Md.)- March 13, 2012
Match Results
In their third match of spring break action in Hilton Head, S.C., the Fighting Scots were unable to capture their elusive first win of the season as St. Mary's (Md.) cruised to an 8-1 overall win.

The Scots found themselves down early after the Seahawks' Andrew Gear (So./Westminster, Md.) and Arvin Wong (Jr./Bethesda, Md.) took an 8-0 win off Gary Gaudio (Sr./Miller Place, N.Y.) and Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, N.Y.) at No. 1 doubles and the doubles teams of Kyle Feeley (Jr./Baltimore, Md.)/Thomas Hoesman (Sr./Ellicott City, Md.) and Jay Guzzone (So./Columbia, Md.)/John Feighner (So./Laurel, Md.) claimed 8-3 victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Despite K. Gaudio battling to a three-set tiebreaker win over Wong at No. 2 singles (4-6, 7-6, 10-6), St. Mary's proved too strong in the end, claiming straight-set wins in each of the remaining singles matchups to bump Gordon to 0-3 overall on the year.

The Scots are back at it tomorrow against non-conference Spring Arbor at 1:00p.m.

GORDON vs. SPRING ARBOR- March 14, 2012
Match Results
Unable to notch their first tally in the win column, the Fighting Scots were once again downed in non-conference spring break play today in Hilton Head, S.C., as Spring Arbor cruised to an 8-1 victory to bump the Scots to 0-4 overall on the season.

After getting swept in each doubles match, Gordon did not have much more success in singles play, as Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, N.Y.) was the only Scot able to pick up a win on the day, defeating Spring Arbor's Tim Smolen (Sr./Westland, Mich.) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Beyond that match, however, the Scots could not stave off the overpowering Cougars squad, who downed Gordon in straight-sets in each other singles match to claim the commanding win.

The Scots return to play tomorrow at 1:00p.m. as they take on Messiah College.

GORDON vs. MESSIAH- March 15, 2012
Match Results
Though the match proved to be the closest of the young season, the Scots were in the end topped by the Falcons of Messiah College, 6-3, to remain winless on the year.

Gary Gaudio
(Sr./Miller Place, N.Y.) and Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, N.Y.) led off the outing with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles to send the Scots into singles play trailing by just one. Kenny Gaudio went on to claim a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Messiah's Andrew Wismer (Sr./Sellersville, Pa.), while teammate Mike Muthersbaugh (Sr./Troy, N.Y.) also picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Zach Brunner (So./West Chester, Pa.) at No. 5. And although Gary Gaudio and Dan Cormier (Sr./Ipswich, Mass.) battled to near wins at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, both were bested in the end to give Messiah the overall victory.

The Scots have one more chance to notch a win in spring break competition as they take on Heidelberg tomorrow at 1:00p.m.

GORDON vs. HEIDELBERG- March 16, 2012
Match Results

In the final day of competition in Hilton Head, the Fighting Scots were unable to come home with a win after Heidelberg swept the match, 9-0, to bump the Scots to 0-6 overall.

Gary Gaudio (Sr./Miller Place, N.Y.) took Bobby Lochotzki (Sr./Oak Harbor, Ohio) to three sets at No. 1 singles, falling in the end 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 11-9 to post the closest match of the day for Gordon. Heidelberg, however, went on to cruise through the remainder of singles play in straight sets for the dominant win to move to 4-3 overall on the year.

The Scots will travel for their next regional match to non-conference Colby-Sawyer on March 22 at 4:00p.m.
