Scots Downed By Emerson In Non-Conference Tilt

Box Score

Hosting Emerson in a non-conference 1x9 on J. Tec White Field today, the Fighting Scots were downed, 8-4, by the visiting Lions to fall to 4-9 overall on the season. With the win Emerson improves to 5-11 on the year.

The Scots found themselves down in the early going after Emerson's Drew Risk (So./Taunton, Mass.) singled to bring home Geoff Lopes (Sr./Falmouth, Mass.) and Ryan Garber (Sr./Holmdel, N.J.) later singled to plate Peter Maltzan (Sr./Lexington, Mass.) for the 2-0 lead after the first. The Lions would further their lead in the top of the next inning as Lopes RBI singled and later crossed home with Adam Speakman (Sr./Barrington, R.I.) following closely behind after a Scots error to make it a 5-0 game after just two innings of play.

That score held until the top of the fourth when Emerson's James Sullivan (So./Medfield, Mass.) stole third and then came home on an error at the plate for the Lions' sixth run of the day. Gordon answered back in the bottom of the next inning, however, as John Brownell (Fr./Glastonbury, Conn.) RBI doubled to score James Burrell (Fr./Decatur, Ga.) and scored himself on an error at first on the next at bat to put the Scots on the board.

Those runs began somewhat of a tug of war between both teams, as Emerson posted a pair of runs of their own in the top of the sixth followed by two more by the Scots in the bottom of the same inning to make it an 8-4 game. In the end, though, despite holding their guests scoreless the rest of the way, the Scots were unable to rally at the plate for the come-from-behind, eventually ceding the four-run loss.

Risk led the way for the Lions, going to 2-5 with three RBI in the win, while Maltzan went 4-5 with two runs and Lopes and Garber each finished with an RBI. Earning the win on the mound was Jeff Kolb (Sr./Barrington, R.I.), who allowed five hits while striking out eight in 6.1 innings of work.

Gordon's effort was led by Burrell who went 2-3 with an RBI, while Brownell and Carlos Pichardo (La Romana, Dominican Republic) recorded an RBI apiece.

The Scots are back at it tomorrow as they host Newbury in a non-conference tilt at 3:00p.m. Emerson will host Anna Maria in a conference doubleheader on March 31 beginning at 12:00p.m.
