Box Score
After being postponed for two days due to unplayable field conditions, the Fighting Scots were blanked 10-0 in their season-opener by the visiting Engineers of MIT to move to 0-1 overall. The Engineers pick up their first win of the year, improving to 1-2 overall.
With neither team posting runs in the first inning, MIT got on the board in the second after Parker Tew (Fr./Chapel Hill, N.C.) RBI singled to drive in Creed Mangrum (So./Sandy, Utah) from second for the early 1-0 lead. Then, after a 1-2-3 outing at the plate for Gordon in the bottom of the second and scoreless third from both teams, Tew struck again in the top of the fourth, ripping a solo shot over the left field wall to make it 2-0 in favor of MIT.
That score remained for the next two and a half innings of action until the offensive floodgates opened for the Engineers in the top of the seventh, who plated seven runs in the inning after Bryan Macomber (Sr./Los Altos, Calif.) ripped a three-run homer to left field, Eben Bitonte (Fr./Wichita, Kan.) scored on a Gordon error at first, and Ricardo Perez (Jr./Vienna, Va.) posted a two-RBI single before crossing home himself later in the inning to make it a 9-0 ballgame.
That lead proved too much for the Scots to overcome in the end, as Perez added one more for insurance on a sac fly to center in the top of the eighth and MIT's defense kept the Scots' bats at bay to preserve the win.
Gordon's
Ben Davidson (Jr./Sterling, Mass.),
Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, N.Y.), and
Geoff Brown (Jr./East Moriches, N.Y.) posted the Scots' only hits of the day, Davidson and Harrington singling and Brown recording a double.
K.J. Parent (Fr./Knoxville, Tenn.) earned the win on the mound for MIT, giving up just two hits and striking out six in 6.0 innings of work.
The Scots take to the field again in Lake Myrtle, Fla. as they face Washington (Md.) in non-conference spring break action on March 11 at 3:30p.m. MIT will travel to non-conference Trinity on March 10 for an 11:00a.m. start.
