The Fighting Scots improved to 9-13 overall after completing a sweep over the visiting Lions of Emerson College in non-conference play today at Gordon's J. Tec White Stadium. With the losses the Lions fall to 5-19 overall on the season.
In the day's opening game, after three innings of scoreless play Emerson struck first for two runs on RBI singles from Drew Risk (So./Taunton, Mass.) and Austin Fontanella (Sr./Pelham, N.H.) to put Gordon down 2-0. The Scots quickly responded in the bottom of the same inning when
Geoff Brown (Jr./East Moriches, N.Y) ripped an RBI double in the center-right gap to score
Carlos Pichardo (Fr./La Romana, Dominican Republic) to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Though the Lions widened the deficit again by one in the top of five on another RBI from Risk, the Scots'
Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, N.Y.) singled to bring in
Kris Camelio (Sr./Lexington, Mass.) in the bottom half of the inning and
Ben Davidson (Jr./Sterling, Mass.) and Harrington later came home on a pair of Emerson errors to overtake the lead, 4-3.
From there the Scots clinched the game defensively by allowing just one hit in the remaining innings while Camelio went yard over the left field fence to add one for insurance and secure the 5-3 win.
Earning the victory on the mound was
Jacob Syed (Fr./Niskayuna, N.Y.), while Kelly took the loss for Emerson.
In the nightcap, once again Emerson jumped out to an early lead when Peter Maltzan (Sr./Lexington, Mass.) sac flied to left to score Cal Garcia (So./Dennis, Mass.) from third for the 1-0 lead in the first. That score remained until the bottom of the third when
Eric Wolak (Sr./Trumbull, Conn.) stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer for what proved to be the game-winning runs, as the Scots allowed their guests just two more hits down the stretch en route to the narrow win.
Wes Arning (Fr./Murfreesboro, Tenn.) picked up the win for Gordon to move to 2-1 on the season after giving up just one hit and retiring one in 2.0 innings of work, while Davidson is credited with the save. Jeff Kolb (Sr./Barrington, R.I.) took the game two loss for the Lions, falling to 2-3 on the year.
The Scots travel to nearby non-conference Salem State on Thursday, April 12 for a 3:00p.m. start, while Emerson travels to Suffolk for a GNAC doubleheader at 2:00p.m.
