Scots Cede 7-2 Road Loss To ENC

Quincy, Mass. – Freshman Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) kept his eight-match winning streak alive on Wednesday afternoon, as the Eastern Nazarene College men’s tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Gordon College.
 
The Lions swept doubles play, tallying three big points over the Fighting Scots. First doubles saw junior Austin Steelman and sophomore Eric Johnson defeat brothers Gary Gaudio and Kenny Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) 8-3. At No. 2 pairs freshmen McKay-Corkum and Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) put together an 8-1 slam of senior Dan Cormier (Ipswich, Mass.) and freshman Sam Mason (Cumberland, Maine). Sophomores Tim Luz (Cumberland, R.I.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) took the third point home in No. 3 doubles play, besting GC senior Mike Muthersbaugh (Troy, N.Y.) and his partner, junior Greg Dry (Madison, Conn.) 8-4.
 
Steelman and senior Gary Gaudio went to the tie-break in No. 1 singles play, and Steelman emerged victorious earning a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 point for Eastern Nazarene. McKay-Corkum and Son made quick work of their opponents at No. 3 and No. 4, and Johnson secured a point for the Lions with his 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles.
 
Sophomore Kenny Gaudio earned one of the Fighting Scots’ two points at No. 2 singles, defeating ENC’s Brandom Lum (Great Neck, N.Y.) 6-2, 6-4. Gordon’s other point came at fifth singles, with Muthersbaugh retiring ENC’s Luz.
 
Boasting a 10-6 overall record, ENC matched its 2010-2011 win total (10-9 / 6-5) on Wednesday. With five regular season matches to go in 2011-2012, the team hopes to keep improving on its impressive marks. The Lions are currently 4-1 in conference play.
 
Gordon drops to 1-11 / 0-3 with the loss. K. Gaudio has a three-match streak of his own going, and is 9-2 in his last 11 contests.
 
The Lions travel to Salve Regina on Saturday, April 14th for a 1:00pm CCC contest. The Fighting Scots travel to Rhode Island College for a non-conference match-up beginning at 3:30pm on Thursday.
