Box Score
The Fighting Scots dropped their third straight game today on the road at the University of New England, falling 15-11 to the host Nor'easters to drop to 8-3 overall, 2-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) this season.
The win pushed the Nor'easters (10-2, 4-0 CCC) past the previous single-season win streak of seven set by the 2000 squad. UNE won for just the third time in its last 12 meetings with the Fighting Scots.
Sophomore Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) led the winners with four goals and a pair of assists. Senior Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) and first-year Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) each scored three times, while senior Jesalyn Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.) added a pair of markers.
For the Fighting Scots, senior
Jocie Knaus (Kensington, Conn.) tallied four goals to pace the attack. Sophomores
Kelly Linehan (White Plains, N.Y.) and
Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) and first-year
Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) scored two goals apiece.
Leading 7-3 at the break, the Nor'easters saw their advantage evaporate in the opening 12 minutes of the second half as Gordon came racing back to tie the match at 10. Knaus rattled off three scores during the surge.
UNE, which never trailed on the afternoon, found the cage three consecutive times to re-establish control. Warren sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by senior Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) to put Big Blue up 13-10 with 8:30 remaining on the clock.
A goal by Gordon's Blomberg would get the visitors within two (13-11), but Cole and Tavella provided the hosts with some breathing room in the final minute.
Sophomore Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made seven stops to record the win for UNE. Junior Nicolle Steel (Ocean City, N.J.) registered five ground balls and four caused turnovers in a fine all-around performance for the Nor'easters.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Danielle Maguire (Braintree, Mass.) came up with 12 saves for Gordon, which also received seven draw controls from senior
Krysti Leach (Naples, Maine).
The Nor'easters will look to continue their winning ways Saturday (Apr. 14) when they host Western New England University at 1 p.m.
Gordon travels to Salve Regina University for a 4:30 p.m. match that same afternoon.
