Salem, MA -- Cory Collins (Winthrop, Mass.) pitched seven innings of one-run ball as Salem State defeated the Gordon College Fighting Scots 5-1 on a rainy Thursday afternoon at the Salem State Baseball Field.
The game was interrupted by a 15 minute rain delay in the seventh as Collins finished his last inning to earn his third win of the season against one defeat. Collins scattered five hits and walked two while striking out eight.
Salem State jumped on top 1-0 in the second after Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, Mass.) doubled and came home on a throwing error by the Gordon second baseman.
The Fighting Scots tied the game at 1-1 in third with three two-out hits in the inning. John Brownell (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Brian Harrington (Shoreham, N.Y.) singled before Eric Wolak (Trumbull, Conn.) drove in Gordon's only run with a base hit.
The Vikings regained the lead in the sixth with two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Chris Cocci (Wakefield, R.I.) led off with a walk and advanced to third on a base hit by Brett Cahill (Gloucester, Mass.). Conti knocked in Cocci with a base hit and after Beliveau executed a sacrifice bunt, Matt Burgess (Kingston, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly.
Salem State plated two more in the seventh to take a commanding four-run lead. Colin Strapp (Philadelphia, Pa.) relieved starter John Kanas (East Moriches, N.Y.) to open the inning. Steve Buitkus (Reading, Mass.) and Kevin Salines (Melrose, Mass.) earned back-to-back walks with one out. After Buitkus was caught stealing third, Cocci and Cahill each delivered run scoring singles with two out to make the score 5-1.
Kanas took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits with three walks. Guido pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Vikings, who have won eleven in a row.
Salem State travels to Plymouth State for a 3:30 PM game tomorrow while Gordon travels to Endicott for a doubleheader on Saturday.
