In a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match with visiting Nichols College today at the Brigham Athletic Complex, the Fighting Scots were overpowered by a dominant Bison squad, falling in a 9-0 sweep to drop to 1-12 overall on the year. With the win Nichols improves to 11-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.
Nichols set the tone for the day in the early going as Brandon Roode (Fr./Griswold, Conn.) and Steve Carella (Sr./Rocky Hill, Conn.) captured an 8-5 win over
Gary Gaudio (Sr./Miller Place, N.Y.) and
Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, N.Y.) at No. 1 doubles. Following suit, Isiah Prosper (So./Manchester, N.H.) and Justin DeLuca (Jr./Mashpee, Mass.) at No. 2 and Paul Healy (Fr./Pomfret, Conn.) and Dan Roman (Fr./Tolland, Conn.) at No. 3 cruised to 8-0 and 8-3 wins, respectively, to leave Gordon behind 3-0 heading into solo play.
Mike Muthersbaugh (Sr./Troy, N.Y.) posted the strongest effort of the day for the Scots at No. 5 singles, taking opponent Dan Saucier (Sr./Newington, Conn.) to three sets only to fall in the end 6-4, 4-6, 0-1 (7-10). From there the Bison took an authoritative hold over the match, stamping straight-set wins in each remaining match to seal the shutout victory.
The Scots look to stop their skid on the road at Western New England on Tuesday, April 17 at 3:30p.m., while the Bison hope to extend their win streak to 11 matches as they host Curry on the same day at 3:30p.m.
