The Fighting Scots improved to 11-16 overall, 5-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a twinbill sweep of visiting Nichols College today at J. Tec White Field, blanking the Bison for a 2-0 win in game one before taking the nightcap, 5-2. The losses drop Nichols to 6-16 overall, 3-9 in the CCC.
After holding the Bison scoreless in their opening at-bat, the Scots'
Ben Davidson (Jr./Sterling, Mass.) capitalized with heads up base running on a Nichols error in right in the bottom half of the inning to give Gordon the early 1-0 lead.
That lead stuck through a quiet three and a half innings until Davidson singled and
Dillon Coleman (Jr./Cromwell, Conn.) scored on another costly error in the outfield by Nichols to give Gordon the 2-0 advantage and eventual win.
Hoping to carry that momentum into game two, the Scots found themselves at an early deficit after Nichols' Dylan Courtney (Sr./Ware, Mass.) singled to drive in Bryan Gill (Jr./New Hyde Park, N.Y.) from third for the 1-0 lead in the first. Though waiting an inning to do so, the Scots responded in the bottom of the second as Coleman reached on an error at first which also scored
Geoff Brown (Jr./East Moriches, N.Y.) on the play to even the game at 1-1. Later that inning, Davidson hit a sac fly to right to plate
Carlos Pichardo (Fr./La Romana, Dominican Republic) and overtake the lead.
That lead was extended in the bottom of the next inning when
Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, N.Y.) singled to lead off and
Eric Wolak (Sr./Trumbull, Conn.) ripped his fifth homerun of the season to give Gordon the 4-1 advantage. And though the Bison gained some ground on a Richie Burke (Sr./Newburyport, Mass.) RBI sac fly to right in the top of the fifth, the Scots' Coleman RBI doubled to bring in one run for insurance in the bottom of the sixth to secure the three-run victory.
Earning the win on the mound was Davidson, who allowed just four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in a full seven innings of work. James Curto (Jr./Braintree, Mass.) is credited with the loss for Nichols.
The Scots travel to face Clark in a non-conference 1x9 tomorrow at 5:00p.m., while the Bison host Springfield tomorrow at 3:30p.m.
