Pilgrims Sail Over Scots In Non-Conference DH

Box Score (game one)
Box Score (game two)

On the road in Henniker, N.H. today for a non-conference doubleheader with New England College, the Fighting Scots were met by a formidable Pilgrims squad who downed the Scots 7-1 and 11-4 to improve to 18-16 overall. The losses drop Gordon to 12-18 on the season.

Game one remained silent through three and half frames of play until NEC finally broke onto the board on a Kevin Caputo (So./Dighton, Mass.) sac fly to right to bring in Chris Biskup (Sr./South Portland, Maine) for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. That relative quiet on offense did not last for long, though, as the Pilgrims surged ahead to a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth behind a Christopher Smith (Fr./Raynham, Mass.) two-RBI single, Biskup two-RBI double, Lucas Burgess (Sr./Bath, N.H.) sac fly to right, and Caputo RBI single. And though the Scots were able to get one back in the top of the sixth as James Burrell (Fr./Decatur, Ga.) doubled to bring in John Brownell (Fr./Glastonbury, Conn.) from first, they would get no closer to the win as Andrew Guercio (Fr./Bethel, Conn.) held the Scots hitless in their final at-bats to earn the win on the mound.

The Pilgrims once again took control in the early going of the nightcap, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the opening inning (one on a Cuputo RBI and one from Burgess on a wild pitch) for the 2-0 advantage. This time the Scots responded immediately when Carlos Pichardo (Fr./La Romana, Dominican Republic) singled to score Eric Wolak (Sr./Trumbull, Conn.) from third and Dillon Coleman (Jr./Cromwell, Conn.) singled to bring in Geoff Brown (Jr./East Moriches, N.Y.) for the equalizer. Then, in the top of the fourth, Gordon took its first lead of the day as Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, N.Y.) stepped up to hit an RBI single and make it a 3-2 ballgame. That lead was short-lived, however, as NEC responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning followed by four in the fifth and three more for insurance in the sixth while limiting the Scots to just one more run along the way to the 11-4 final.

The Scots return to play on Saturday, April 21 as they host Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at J. Tec White Field beginning at 12:00p.m. NEC will host UMaine Farmington on the same day at 1:00p.m.
