The Fighting Scots captured a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) wins today over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, taking game one 1-0 in extra innings before going on to claim a 4-2 nightcap win. The wins improve Gordon to 7-5 in conference, while Wentworth drops to 6-8 in league action.
Game one proved to be almost entirely a battle of pitching and defense, as the Scots and Leopards recorded just one hit each through the regulation seven innings to force an extra frame. After retiring Wentworth 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, though, the Scots got the elusive first run of the day as
Eric Wolak (Sr./Trumbull, Conn.) singled to score
Stephen Crawford (So./Haddon Heights, N.J.) from second to lift Gordon to the victory.
Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, N.Y.) earned the win on the mound for the Scots, while Alex Wong (Jr./Lewiston, Maine) is credited with the loss after pitching the full game for Wentworth.
Looking to rebound from their heartbreaker loss in game one, the Leopards started their offense early in the nightcap when Jake Mailman (Fr./Medway, Mass.) RBI singled in the middle of the inning to score Wong from third for the 1-0 lead. Though waiting to do so, the Scots responded in the bottom of the third when
John Brownell (Fr./Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled to plate
Carlos Pichardo (Fr./La Romana, Dominican Republic) and later came home himself to overtake the lead, 2-1.
Then, in the top of five, Wong tallied the equalizer on a sac fly to right to bring in Joe Meucci (Sr./West Hartford, Conn.) from third to make it 2-2. The game from there belonged to Gordon, however, as
Geoff Brown (Jr./East Moriches, N.Y.) ripped the game-winning two-RBI single to score Harrington and Crawford en route to the two-run win.
Harrington improved to 6-0 with the game two win, while Adam Farrar (Sr./Newport, Vt.) took the loss for Wentworth.
The Scots return to CCC play on Monday April 23 as they travel to Newport, R.I. to take on Salve Regina University at 2:00p.m. The Leopards hit the road again tomorrow for a non-conference 1x9 with UMass Boston at 12:00p.m.
