WNE Sweeps Scots On Senior Day

Box Score (game one)
Box Score (game two)

In their final Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) twinbill of the regular season, the Fighting Scots were swept by the visiting Golden Bears of Western New England on Senior Day to close out their CCC schedule at 7-9.

With both teams combining for just five hits and no runs in the first five innings of play in game one, Western New England finally broke the silence in the top of the sixth when Steve Ambrosino (So./Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) RBI singled to plate Mike Taylor (Sr./Andover, Mass.) and came home himself on the next at-bat off a Mike Rubino (Jr./Northford, Conn.) double take the 2-0 lead. After the Scots fell 1-2-3 in the bottom half, the Golden Bears got their bats going for another four runs in the top of the final frame to capture the 6-0 win.

Ambrosino and Rubino collected a pair of RBIs each in the win while teammate Tom Booth (Jr./Milford, Conn.) recorded one. Earning the victory on the mound was Brendan Nugent (So./Milford, Conn.), who improved to 6-1 on the year. Gordon’s Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, N.Y.) ceded his first loss to move to 6-1.

The nightcap was shaping up to have a similar storyline to game one with neither team able to plate a run in the opening innings until Rubino RBI singled to bring in Jeff Schult (So./Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) for the 1-0 advantage in the top of the third. That lead did not last for long, however, as the Scots’ Ben Davidson (Jr./Sterling, Mass.) responded in the bottom of the same inning with an RBI single and Dillon Coleman (Jr./Cromwell, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch to overtake the lead, 2-1.

Then, in the top of the fifth, WNE’s Rubino delivered yet again to score Schult and tally the equalizer. With that score holding through seven, the game was decided in extra innings when Matt Anthonis (Jr./Guilford, Conn.) RBI singled to plate the go-ahead run in the top of the tenth, Taylor later RBI singled for an insurance run, and pitcher Mark DiTomasso (Sr./Hebron, Conn.) retired the Scots’ first three batters in the bottom of the inning to earn the two-run win.

After losing a tiebreaker for the fourth seed in the CCC tournament, the Scots assume the number five spot and will travel to face Endicott College on Thursday, May 3 at 3:00p.m. With the wins, WNE improves to a league-leading 15-1 in CCC play to enter the upcoming postseason tournament as the top seed, hosting Salve Regina University on the same day at 3:00p.m.
