Blomberg Nets Eight To Lead Scots To CCC Quarterfinal Win Over WNE

Box Score
The Fighting Scots improved to 13-3 overall on the year and advanced to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semifinals with a 20-12 win over sixth-seeded Western New England in the tournament’s opening round today at the Brigham Athletic Complex. Western New England closes out its season at 6-12 overall.

Anna Blomberg (So./Simsbury, Conn.) led all scorers with a phenomenal eight-goal, one-assist, five-draw control afternoon, while Jordan Alexander (Sr./Portland, Maine) also recorded nine points off five goals and four assists. Jocie Knaus (Sr./Kensington, Conn.) had a solid outing with three goals, while Kari Christensen (So./Standish, Maine) netted two and Stephanie Fitzgerald (So./Groveland, Mass.) and Abby Illian (Fr./Hillsdale, N.J.) added a goal and an assist each. Additionally, Fitzgerald and Krysti Leach (Sr./Naples, Maine) collected seven and five draw controls, respectively, while netminder Danielle Maguire (So./Braintree, Mass.) stopped an impressive 15 of the Golden Bears’ shots.

Western New England’s effort was paced by Katie Toomy (Sr./Northborough, Mass.) with three goals and as many assists, Jessica Scannapieco (Fr./Blue Bell, Pa.) with five goals, and Liz McRoberts (Sr./Bourne, Mass.) with two scores. Megan Doyle (Sr./Putnam Valley, N.Y.) also chipped in a goal and an assist and Veronica Miano (Sr./Southington, Conn.) rounded out the scoring with a single tally. Emily Castleman (Fr./Wilbraham, Mass.) had standout day in net for the Golden Bears with 14 saves in 51 minutes of work.

WNE’s Miano got the scoring going on the day at 26:37 in the first, finishing a free position off a Gordon foul to give her team the early 1-0 lead. Blomberg leveled the game out again two minutes later off an Alexander feed, but WNE’s McRoberts responded to regain the advantage for the Golden Bears within a minute and a half. From there, however, the Scots overtook the lead behind an unanswered five goals to make it a 6-2 game at the 18:14 mark. Determined not to let the deficit grow any further, Toomy began what turned out to be a 7-3 run in the remaining minutes of the period to leave the game at a 9-9 deadlock at the half.

At the start of the second stanza, Christensen and Alexander netted a goal each to give the Scots a lead that would be challenged in the opening minutes of the period but never relinquished the rest of the way. Though Scannapieco buried a solo effort at 23:55 to keep the game within one, the Scots exploded offensively for a 9-2 run to put the game out of comeback reach for their guests.

The Scots will travel to face the second-seeded Nor’easters of the University of New England in the CCC semifinals on Wednesday, May 2 at 4:00p.m.
