The Fighting Scots extended their winning streak to three games today in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) head-to-head with Wentworth at the Brigham Athletic Complex, riding seven second half goals to a 9-4 win over the visiting Leopards to improve to 5-5 overall, 3-2 in conference. The loss drops Wentworth to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the CCC.
Freshman attackman
Mio Sison (Warren, Mich.) paved the way offensively for the Scots, recording six points in total on the day (four goals, two assists), five of which came in the second half alone, to lift Gordon to the five-goal victory.
The first half proved to be slow-going offensively for both teams, as the only scores in the entire 30 minutes came from Gordon's
Dan Perednia (Sr./Granby, Conn.) at 1:59 in the first, Wentworth's Steve Glover (So./Marstons Mills, Mass.) in the final minute of the first, and Sison with just under 20 seconds to play in the second.
That all changed in the second half, however, as the Scots exploded for six unanswered goals in the third stanza behind single tallies from
Matt Dantona (Fr./Syosset, N.Y.), Perednia,
Wes Chittick (Sr./Glenside, Pa.),
Jeff Ryan (Sr./Gillette, N.J.), and a pair from Sison to build the lead to a hefty 8-1 heading into the final quarter of play.
Though Wentworth threatened comeback with a trio of goals to open the fourth, Sison put the final stamp on the effort at 3:49 to stop the Leopards' run and secure the victory for Gordon.
Austin Long (Fr./San Diego, Calif.) posted a standout day in the midfield for the Scots, winning eight faceoffs to go with three ground balls, while
Ian Knechtle (So.New Canaan, Conn.),
Kenny Stirling (Jr./Sterling, Mass.), Ryan, and keeper
Houston Zemanski (Jr./Annapolis, Md.) anchored the defensive effort to keep Wentworth's attack at bay.
The Scots travel to the University of New England on Wednesday, April 11 for a CCC matchup at 7:00p.m., while Wentworth returns to the North Shore on Saturday, April 7 to square off against Endicott at 12:00p.m.
