Lyons Edge Scots, 12-10, In Non-Conference Tilt

Box Score
In a non-conference tilt with Wheaton College tonight at the Brigham Athletic Complex, the visiting Lyons used a seven-goal run spanning 17 minutes in the middle of the game to leave the host Fighting Scots on the losing end of the 12-10 result. With the loss the Scots move to 8-2 overall on the year, while Wheaton improves to 8-3.

The Scots look well-positioned for the win in the early going after Stephanie Alexander (So./Groveland, Mass.) finished a feed from Anna Blomberg (So./Simsbury, Conn.) at 25:49 to open the floodgates of scoring which brought three goals from Jordan Alexander (Sr./Portland, Maine) and one apiece from Blomberg and Abby Illian (Fr./Hillsdale, N.J.) for a 6-0 lead after 17 minutes of play. Wheaton was finally able to stop the run at 11:31 when Kristen Palmer (Jr./East Dorset, Vt.) finished a solo effort to put the Lyons on the board. Though Blomberg would answer right back a minute later with a converted free position, Wheaton took over the scoring and the lead with their 7-0 run to leave the Scots trailing, 8-7, with 12 minutes left in regulation.

Once again Blomberg responded, netting back-to-back goals off Alexander assists to give Gordon the go-ahead score, 9-8. Not to be outdone, however, the Lyons utilized a 4-0 run behind a goal from Hailey Colburn (Sr./Concord, N.H.) and three straight from Charlotte DeSantis (So./Darien, Conn.) to take over lead, 12-9, with less than eight minutes left. And although Blomberg and Alexander would connect for another score in the waning minutes, the Lyons' final run proved enough to secure the victory.

Colburn finished with four goals for Wheaton to pace the win, while DeSantis recorded three and Palmer and Katie Powers (Sr./Ashburnham, Mass.) each tallied two. Keeper Katy Ananian (Fr./Belmont, Mass.) earned the win between the pipes, turning away a total of nine shots on the evening.

For the Scots, Alexander posted standout numbers with three goals and five assists, while Blomberg rounded out the effort with five goals, one assist, and Fitzgerald and Illian finished with one each. Additionally, Fitzgerald collected six draw controls in the outing and netminder Danielle Maguire (So./Braintree, Mass.) stopped 12 of the Lyons' attempts on net.

The Scots return to conference action following Easter break on Wednesday, April 11 at the University of New England. Wheaton will host NEWMAC opponent Mount Holyoke this coming Saturday at 1:00p.m.
