Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Rookie Thomas Fitzpatrick (Fr./South Boston, Mass.) fired a complete-game, three-hit shutout, as third-seeded Curry College defeated fifth-seeded Gordon College, 5-0, on day three of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball tournament. The Colonels improve to 18-23 and advance to the final day of the conference tournament on Monday while the Fighting Scots were eliminated, ending their season at 15-26 overall.
Curry got all of the runs it would need in the bottom of the first frame, as junior Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, Mass.) reached on an error and later came around to score on an RBI single by classmate Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
Then, in the bottom of the second, a bunt single by Curry sophomore Kyle Connors (So./Stoughton, Mass.) brought home senior David Stevens (Sr./Deerfield Beach, Fla.), who led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. Sophomore Matt O'Neill (So./Milton, Mass.) later crossed the plate on a throwing error and Connors scored when senior Carlos Cornejo (Sr./Lake Forest, Calif.) reached on another error, giving the Colonels a 4-0 advantage after two.
With the Scots struggling at the plate, Curry added a single run in the bottom of the fourth to further the gap to 5-0 midway through the game. And though Gordon was finally able to threaten offensively with some solid hits down the stretch, Curry's defense stranded several Scots runners on base to seal the shutout victory.
Fitzpatrick (4-2) went all nine innings, giving up three hits and five walks while striking out seven, while Connors went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI. Starter
Eric Wolak (0-4) (Sr./Trumbull, Conn.) took the loss for Gordon, allowing five hits, five runs (two earned), and a walk while fanning one in 3.1 innings of work.
