Salem, Mass.—In their season opener, the Salem State Vikings field hockey team bested the Fighting Scots of Gordon College 2-1 as senior co-captain Courtney Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes remaining to secure the win.
Kadye McCarthy (Oxford, Mass.) struck first at the 19:26 mark in the first half to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. McCarthy scored on an assist by Lynch. Leah LaPalombara (Glen Mills, Pa.) gave Gordon College hope when she knocked in a goal, which was assisted by Karli Balmer (Perkasie, Pa.), to knot the score at 1-1 early in the second half.
The game remained tied and appeared to be headed for overtime until Lynch outfought a Gordon defender deep in the zone and wristed a shot past Fighting Scots’ goaltender Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md. ) for the winning score.
Gordon College and Salem State both played solid defense with the Fighting Scots holding an 11-10 advantage in shots. Gordon net-minder Bury made six saves in the loss while Salem State goalie Michaela Boyer (South Hadley, Mass.) notched eight stops in the win.
Salem State’s next game is Thursday at home at 3:30pm against Salve Regina. Gordon College plays again next Tuesday against Babson on their home field at 4:00pm.
