The Fighting Scots opened their 2012 campaign today in the Bennett Athletic Center hosting Framingham State, Mitchell, Newbury, University of St. Joseph (Conn.), and Suffolk in the Gordon Invitational.
Gordon vs. St. Joseph's
Gordon 2-3 St. Joseph's (25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 13-15)
In their season-opening match with the Bluejays of the University of St. Joseph, the Scots came out of the gates firing to claim an early 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win in game one. USJ then responded immediately with a pair of back-to-back 25-20 wins in games two and three to come within one of the overall win. Refusing to go quietly, though, Gordon rallied to take a 25-21 win in game four and force a fifth and deciding final frame. Despite a come from behind in that final stanza, however, the Scots came up just short of the match win after being edged by their guests, 15-13.
Gordon vs. Suffolk
Gordon 3-2 Suffolk (25-21, 25-27, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12)
Looking to avenge the match one loss to notch their first win of the season, the Scots did just that against Suffolk in match two, capturing a thrilling 3-2 victory to even their record at 1-1 overall.
After registering a 25-21 win in the first game to open the match, the Scots then traded games with the Rams (25-27, 25-18, 23-25) to force their second five-set match of the day. This time, however, the Scots would not be denied as they downed their guests by a three-point margin (15-12) for the overall victory.
Gordon vs. Mitchell
Gordon 3-1 Mitchell (25-16, 28-30, 25-20, 28-26)
With a win under their belts, the Scots carried that momentum into their third and final match of the day to command a 3-1 win over Mitchell and improve to 2-1 overall on the young season.
Booking a comfortable 25-16 win in the opening frame, the Scots then battled the Mariners through a back and forth second, eventually ceding a 28-30 game to leave the match tied at 1-1. That would prove as close as Mitchell would get, though, as Gordon secured the victory with 25-20 and 28-26 wins in the third and fourth, respectively, the close out the win and the day.
Earning a Gordon Invitational All-Tournament nod was Gordon captain
Keri Hustus (Sr./Eastford, Conn.), who was joined by Newbury's Sydney Fish (So./Kalamazoo, Mich.), USJ's Ciara Perez (So./Manchester, Conn.), Mitchell's Arianna Thomas (Sr./Fresno, Calif.), Framingham's Ashley Nee (So./Hanson, Mass.), and Suffolk's Colbey Kennedy (Jr./Old Lyme, Conn.). Additionally, Framingham's Andressa Fernandes (Jr./Framingham, Mass.) was named the tournament MVP.
The Scots return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 4 when they host non-conference Becker at 7:00p.m.
