NEWPORT, R.I. – Evan Thomas' (Mohnton, Pa.) header from Mark Marino (Smithfield, R.I.) off of a Rainer Randell (Providence, R.I.) corner kick in the 71
st minute capped a thrilling 3-2 comeback win by the Salve Regina University men's soccer team over Gordon College on Saturday at Reynolds Field. With the win, the Seahawks improve to a perfect 5-0-0 on the season, including a 2-0-0 mark during conference play, while the Fighting Scots drop to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
Marino led all players with three points on the afternoon, as he drove home a goal of his own just 10 minutes earlier. Bobby Ernst (Needham, Mass.) had the Seahawks' first goal on their only shot of the first half, coming in the 40
th minute. Randell had two assists while Zachary Kraft (Tenafly, N.J.) added a helper of his own. Goalkeeper Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) made three saves in the victory to improve to 4-0-0 in his freshman campaign.
Andy Guthrie (Beaver Falls, Pa.) and
Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.) each scored for the Fighting Scots.
David Egeler (Danbury, Conn.) had Gordon's lone assist, while
Tim Hardy (Gorham, Maine) made one save in net for the Scots on the afternoon.
Guthrie opened the scoring in the 19
th minute off a Seahawks' foul. Vandervoort doubled Gordon's lead in he 31
st minute with an unassisted marker.
The Seahawks were unable to muster any real offensive threat against the Scots, until Ernst broke through with his header in the 40
th minute to send the two teams into the break with Gordon holding a 2-1 advantage.
Momentum slowly shifted after halftime, culminating in Marino's game-tying goal.
Still tied at 2-all with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Seahawks continued to pressure, giving them a corner kick opportunity. Randell's corner kick found its way to Marino who headed the ball across the goal line to Thomas, who then headed the ball past the Gordon goalkeeper, sending Reynolds field into a frenzy.
Despite two free kicks in the final 10 minutes, strong Seahawk defense preserved the victory and Salve Regina's perfect record.
Gordon College returns to action Tuesday, hosting Salem State at 7:00 p.m. Salve Regina hosts Johnson & Wales University on Monday (4 p.m.) at Reynolds Field. ??
