On the road in Waterville, Maine for the Colby College Invitational, the Fighting Scots went 1-2 on the weekend, falling to host Colby and Maine Maritime in straight sets but picking up a 3-0 win over UMaine Farmington to move to 4-3 overall on the season.
On opening night against Colby, the Mules overpowered the Scots in three with 25-6, 25-21, and 25-9 wins behind the standout play of Natalie Roy (Fr./Los Altos, Calif.) and Kate Pleasants (Jr./Virginia Beach, Va.). Roy shined on the night with team-highs of nine kills, 10 digs, and three aces, while Pleasants added 26 assists and six digs in the win.
Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) led Gordon with 22 assists, while
Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) and
Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) both had four kills. Additionally,
Keri Hustus (Eastford, Conn.) recorded 15 digs and one ace and
Shannon Peterson (West Simsbury, Conn.) added six digs.
In their second match of the weekend on Saturday morning, the Scots rebounded from Friday's loss to sweep UMaine Farmington (25-15, 25-14, 25-15) for their fourth win of the season. Kimmel once again led the effort for Gordon with 30 assists and five aces, while
Faith Gerdes (So./Wall Lake, Iowa),
Chelsie Clemens (Jr./Santa Barbara, Calif.), and
Shaylyn Roach (So./South Weymouth, Mass.) tallied five kills apiece. Kranyak also added four kills and seven digs and Peterson contributed 12 digs.
Looking to carry that momentum into their final match against Maine Maritime, the Scots battled to narrow two-point losses in the opening two sets but could not sustain enough momentum for a comeback effort, eventually falling in the final frame, 25-18, to cede the match to the Mariners.
MMA's Ariel Kights (Jr./Brookton, Maine) posted 11 kills, while Melissa Lail (Jr./Elizabeth, Colo.) added seven more to lead the Mariners to the win. Jennifer Dixon (Sr./Woodstock, Md.) assisted 29 kills and served up two aces, while Chantal Adderley (Jr./Nassau, Bahamas) recorded three solo blocks and a pair of assisted blocks.
Kimmel recorded 21 assists and eight digs in the loss for Gordon, while Kranyak posted 11 kills and eight digs and Peterson booked 14 digs.
The Scots return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 12 as they host Regis at 7:00p.m. in non-conference play.
