Box Score
In a non-conference rivalry tilt between Gordon and the visiting Pilgrims of New England College this afternoon at the Brigham Athletic Complex, the Fighting Scots made a dramatic comeback but in the end were clipped in overtime, 4-3, by their guests to move to 1-3 overall on the season. The win marks NEC's first of the year (1-3/0-0).
With NEC carrying a 2-0 advantage at the break behind goals from Rachel Carnaroli (Sr./Bellingham, Mass.) and Kate Roberge (Sr./Essex Junction, Vt.), the Scots were forced to make up ground coming into the second half. Sophomore defender
Gayle Watson (Harare, Zimbabwe) began that charge just two and a half minutes into the period when she drove home her first of the season off a corner to close the gap to 2-1. Looking to reestablish a more comfortable lead, the Pilgrims' Roberge netted her second of the day on an unassisted effort at 41:33 to widen the gap back to two. Just two minutes later, though, senior captain
Mindy Fowler (Winslow, Maine) collected a feed from
Karli Balmer (So./Perkasie, Pa.) off a corner and snuck one past NEC keeper Courtney Duquette (Jr./Enfield, N.H.) to once again make it a one-goal game.
Then, in the 55th minute, forward
Leah LaPalombara (Sr./Glens Mills, Pa.) tallied the equalizer from Balmer to make it a 3-3 game and force overtime for the second consecutive game for Gordon. Despite the Scots outshooting their guests by a 7-3 margin in the extra frame, however, it was NEC's Carnaroli with the game-winning heroics in the 81st minute, slotting in a Kristen O'Connell (Jr./Melrose, Mass.) pass to stamp the victory.
Anna Bury (Jr./Huntingtown, Md.) recorded 10 saves and Watson added one defensive save on the afternoon for Gordon, while Duquette turned away 16 for the win.
The Scots continue their non-conference schedule as they host MIT on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 6:00p.m. NEC will host Plymouth State on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 5:00p.m.
