Box Score
Delaware, Ohio- Freshman midfielder Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.), junior midfielder Jon Stegner (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), and junior midfielder Matt Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) scored goals to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Gordon in the second round of the Fred Myers/adidas® Invitational championship on Saturday at Roy Rike Field.
Gordon goalkeeper
Ryan Coil (Sr./Brentwood, Ohio) and his Ohio Wesleyan counterpart, senior Paul Hendricks (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne), each made outstanding plays to keep the game scoreless.
Coil was first, making a diving save to stop a shot by sophomore midfielder Colton Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) in the 19th minute.
In the 24th minute, the Fighting Scots then put together some crisp passes in the Ohio Wesleyan end, with
Kristian Kasiguran (So./Oakwood Village, Ohio) ending up with an open look at the Bishop goal, but Hendricks was able to kick the ball out of danger.
The rest of the Gordon defense got into the act as well, when Bloecher's header off a corner kick in the 31st minute was stopped by a Fighting Scot defender near the right post.
Coil made another good play to tip a header by junior midfielder Emilio Morales (Huber Heights/Wayne) over the crossbar in the 43rd minute.
Junior midfielder Ian O'Keefe (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) took the ensuing corner, the ball went out to Schaefer near the top of the box, and Schaefer delivered a shot from the right side to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead with 2:05 left in the first half.
Stegner added to the Bishop lead in the 70th minute, winning the ball from a Gordon defender and breaking in alone against Coil.
Shadoan made it a 3-0 contest in the 81st minute, eluding Coil and firing a shot into the unprotected net.
Hendricks finished with four saves as the Bishop defense yielded only 10 shots during the contest.
"It was good to have (starting defender) Kit North back in tonight," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "He and (freshman back) Lonnie Barnes did a great job in the center of the defense. I thought we did a good job of possessing the ball in the second half, making them chase it around."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Gordon, 26-10. Coil collected 8 saves on the night.
The Scots, now 1-2-1 overall, return home to host Lasell on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 4:00p.m.
